About the Role

The Principal Agreement Making is a new role developed to support the Native Title Agreement Making program of work within the national Indigenous Engagement portfolio. This role will have a National remit working across all relevant Australian jurisdictions with a focus on Western Australia. The candidate will be required to develop strong relationships with Traditional Owner groups on whose country BHP operate. This candidate will provide expert advice and direction to a broad group of professional’s and operational leadership across BHP with a focus on the negotiation of Native Title Agreements. The role is responsible primarily for the successful negotiation of new agreements and review of existing agreements across the agreed work program.

This role will be based in the BHP Perth office, flexible work options available.

The Principal Agreement Making will also be accountable for:

  • Developing and maintaining trusted and respectful partnerships with Traditional Owner groups, Aboriginal communities and Aboriginal Prescribed Bodies Corporates;
  • Supporting the Indigenous Engagement team and the Operational Leadership teams in the effective negotiation, review and implementation of Native Title and land use agreements with Indigenous groups;
  • Providing subject matter expertise in the negotiation of new agreements and review of existing agreements;
  • Providing asset and functional coaching, support and advice on Indigenous Engagement related content and agreement making in general; 

About You

The successful candidate will have strong negotiation and influencing skills with the following experience:

  • Proven experience working with and the development of strong relationships with Traditional Owner groups and Aboriginal communities / effective community engagement background;
  • Engaging and influencing at the most senior levels of the business to drive and lead change;
  • Demonstrated expertise in agreement negotiation, reviews and implementation;
  • Ability to work with and influence internal and external stakeholders to develop projects or programs that contribute to sustainable and achieve mutually beneficial outcomes;
  • Proven ability to problem solve, work under pressure and time critical deadlines and;
  • Tertiary qualification (or equivalent) in a Legal discipline desirable.
