The Opportunity – Permanent, Full Time Position
This newly created position of Principal Value Chain Sustainability will be responsible for co-creating the Group value chain (Scope 3) greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) reduction strategy, to support delivery of our goal of net zero Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2050. You will identify ‘whole of company’ actions in response to external and internal drivers and facilitate execution of the strategy. The role also provides accurate and timely information and communications to share with stakeholders and South32 employees, providing insight about Group performance, challenges, risks and opportunities.
Reporting to the Practice Lead Group Decarbonisation key role accountabilities include:
Lead development of a comprehensive group value chain decarbonisation strategy, covering:
- Identification of strategic objectives and a prioritised action plan to support delivery of our Scope 3 GHG emissions reduction goal and commitments outlined in our 2022 Climate Change Action Plan Our Climate Change Action plan (south32.net)
- Development of internal monitoring, evaluation and reporting processes required to evaluate organisational performance against the strategic objectives and plan.
- Co-ordinating and consolidating understanding of Scope 3 activity across the global portfolio
- Understanding and communicating implications of Scope 3 commitments and goal on our functions and operations
- Lead identification of Scope 3 risks and opportunities.
- Deliver research and analysis to inform value chain decarbonisation strategy as well as reporting and disclosure activity.
Facilitate execution of the group value chain decarbonisation strategy, covering:
- Business as usual interface between operations and functions (predominantly the Commercial function, e.g., supply and marketing, but others as required)
- Participation in cross-functional projects, initiatives and working groups that have a value chain decarbonisation focus.
- Monitor organisational performance against decarbonisation objectives
- Provides capacity building and training to internal stakeholders
- Represents South32 in specific external groups and supports submissions and engagements relevant to Scope 3 strategy
About You
You will be required to have the following:
- 7years experience in a large complex organisation
- Experience influencing and working with diverse, multi-stakeholder teams from multiple geographies, commodities, jurisdictions, and cultures
- Experience in stakeholder engagement covering external relationships within industry & government, and internally setting new expectations and managing emerging risks
- Strong understanding of decarbonisation, energy transition and corporate strategy
- Solid understanding of existing and emerging sustainability / climate change reporting requirements, regulations, policies, and protocols
- Experience in contributing to development or revision of regulation and/or policy.
- Good understanding of energy and resources sector commercial & technical fundamentals
- Extensive technical and applied knowledge in a broad range of decarbonisation issues in a multi-location, diversified company context
- Broad knowledge of international sustainability trends, developments, and expectations about investors, customers, and other stakeholders
- Familiarity with investor expectations for ESG performance
- Strong influencing and communication skills and an ability to establish credibility with senior leaders
- Highly developed project management skills and ability to prioritise actions that have the largest impact on the business
- Superior peer-to-peer teamwork and collaboration skills, challenges others, manages conflict and facilitates input in the form of ideas, views, and expertise
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or similar
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written in English (essential) with proficiency in Spanish or Afrikaans (desirable)

Ideally, this role will be based at our offices in Perth WA, however other locations will be considered dependent on applicant . We understand and value the benefits flexibility brings and operate a hybrid work model (in the office and from home)
