About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for a Process Engineer to provide technical support to analyse system performance and ultimately improve the operational efficiency of the Refinery.

Resilience, self-motivation and exceptional communication skills are essential for this role, as you will be required to interface with broad stakeholder groups, displaying credibility, building trust and influencing outcomes. You will be a solution focused leader, level headed thinker and most importantly committed to driving positive outcomes for the business. Working Monday to Friday and reporting to the Superintendent - Technical - Digestion, your focus will be on: 

  • Developing and maintaining process strategies and procedures to capture the “best operating practice” to improve the process performance.
  • Using engineering techniques to problem solve and make design recommendations
  • Undertaking audits to ensure that standards are met and participating in defining engineering approaches, planning and scheduling work
  • Initiate and complete general technical improvement projects and work closely with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Your ability to trouble shoot, problem solve and investigate will see you succeed in this role!

About youTo succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Strong focus and background in safety improvement.
  • Tertiary level qualification in Chemical engineering
  • Previous experience in a Process Engineering role within a heavy industry environment
  • Statistical analysis capabilities and working knowledge of lean six sigma
  • Good technical communication skills to both technical experts and lay audiences
  • Proven experience identifying and addressing improvement opportunities in a similar environment.

  • Operational experience in the application of Health and Safety systems
  • Experience in supporting the safe delivery of operational and maintenance related projects

Rio Tinto Aluminium – Yarwun Operations

With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.

Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).

Along with Boyne Smelters Limited and Queensland Alumina Limited, our Yarwun Operation supports the local community in a wide range of initiatives through Here for Gladstone.
