Product Coach – Brisbane, Australia

Rio Tinto is building a world-class software engineering capability

Within our company wide Information Systems & Technology function, we are building an internal software development and delivery team focussing on high value and strategic products for the digital transformation of Rio Tinto. We are building this capability and capacity with the support of a strategic partnership with Endava, one of the world’s leading software engineering companies. We are recruiting for junior, experienced and leadership roles to establish this capability for scaling as we shift our technology landscape to products and platforms. We are building a culture that is value driven, diverse and inclusive, innovative and fun with challenging problems and opportunities to solve.

About the role

We are seeking a Product Coach to join our Delivery team to play a key role in establishing a centre of excellence for Product Management and Agile across the Product and Software Development (P&SD) function. The Product Coach will be responsible for defining what good looks like in terms of Product Management and the Agile practice adoption, championing end-to-end delivery with transparency and clarity. You will develop Agile and Product principles and practices to upskill and continuously improve capability. Your work will enable the Product teams to thrive and ultimately satisfy the needs of the customer by developing inspiring and successful products with quality and speed.

We are looking for a supportive and empowering leader with great hard (previously known as soft) skills. An ability to build trust and rapport and communicate effectively. Someone with high ownership, passion and a desire to work with teams to implement best practice with a focus on customer and business needs.

What you will bring

  • Collaborate with all teams within the P&SD function to co-design, develop and maintain the overall Agile and Product adoption strategy to help drive and establish a ‘Product Led’ function within IS&T.
  • Continuously improve and scale the approach as P&SD’s needs and capabilities evolve.
  • Identify systemic impediments to delivering value and work with the appropriate partners to unblock them.
  • Define a communication strategy which advocates Product Management principles, Agile practices and engages colleagues in the Product journey.
  • Lead the development of an advancing Product learning curriculum.
  • Improve Product capability across P&SD to help individuals and teams to discover, define and build the ‘right things’, in the right way - through the use of best practice, tools and experience.
  • Develop the Agile and Product training and learning offering so it is fit for purpose and meets the needs of our team members at an individual and team level.
  • Deliver training, covering the principles, practices, tools and techniques of the Agile and Product learning offering.
  • Provide day to day coaching and support for teams to understand and apply Product principles and best practices in an Agile way.
  • Support team effectiveness and the consistency in application of Product Management principles and Agile practices throughout team evolution, e.g. ‘launching’ new product teams and introducing new team members.
  • Measure using empirical data to continuously improve delivery of coaching and training.
  • Help the teams to optimise the end-to-end value stream by collaborating across teams, domains and functions.
  • Support teams to use evidence-based data to continuously improve product knowledge, validate the roadmap and help drive conversations regarding the next best investment for the product.
  • Build and maintain a centre of excellence through education and engagement with the wider product community.
  • Provide mentorship and support at a Portfolio, Value Stream, Program, Product and Team level.

About you

  • 4+ years’ experience in product management across the full product development lifecycle or leading an Agile coaching function with exposure to a wide array of technologies, methodologies and business environments.
  • A deep understanding of Agile principles and practices and how these have been applied to drive successful product delivery.
  • Experience working independently in a fast-paced environment, navigating complexity to deliver valuable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a broad range of business partners, including senior stakeholders, to understand issues, collect feedback and build alignment.
  • Experience with tools such Azure DevOps and Miro.
  • Desirable: Agile Certification.
  • A self-starter and change agent, with a passion for problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience leading effective organisational transformation, using Agile project management, organisational change, lean, and design-thinking methodologies and techniques.
  • Ability to analyse data to support decision-making.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, presentation, facilitation and negotiation skills.
  • A collaborative, flexible and open working style with an ability to quickly establish trust and credibility.
  • Integrity, energy, mentality and tenacity to “make things happen”.
