We are looking for a motivated and engaging Superintendent – Fire Systems Program to lead a high-performance team of Project Leads and Engineers, critical to the success of Rio Tinto's Operations. Working with established systems and processes, you will deliver a portfolio of sustaining capital projects that support our mining operations to produce iron ore in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Taking ownership of the Fire Systems Asset strategy, you will enable your team to achieve safety, productivity & cost improvements across the Iron Ore portfolio. The wide influence of the role requires stakeholder engagement from all areas of the business to ensure fire protection related assets are managed effectively. The fire protection asset related works touches mechanical, civil, electrical, controls discipline with assets such as tanks, pumps, pipes, hydrants, sprinklers, fire panels, SCADA, breakers, gas suppression, VESDA etc.

You will be an inspiring role model and coach for positive behaviours, practices and processes, whilst providing leadership, development and support to a team of project professionals responsible for delivering electrical and control obsolescence projects.

Reporting to the Principal Advisor Fire, Control and Electrical, some of the accountabilities of this role include:

  • Responsible for co-ordinating the Fire System projects across RTIO sites and support the implementation of the program.
  • Accountable for the program schedule, budget and risk register providing support to the Project Leads to identify project issues and develop appropriate solutions to maintain safe and efficient progress.
  • Engage frequently with key project stakeholders (internal and external), to ensure sufficient priority is given to these projects to maintain suitable delivery momentum.
  • Contribute to the development of a 5-10 year capital plan for Fire System assets
  • Ensure alignment of Fire System project priority in the program with key stakeholders within Maintenance Planning &Engineering, Operations and Maintenance teams
  • Prepares monthly progress reports and presents at monthly study meetings
  • Develop the program business case in line with the business strategy
  • Preparation and technical review of critical documents (funding papers, scope of work, noting papers, approvals applications)
  • Raise the awareness and knowledge of fire protection systems across the business.
  • Maintain awareness and understanding of national and international fire protection standards and changing fire protection technologies and their application.
  • Create a project delivery plan which meets or exceeds all requirements of a Sustainable mining operation which minimises impact on our environment and pays respect to our traditional land owners.

  • Supporting the improvement of the project delivery systems, processes and procedures ensuring that they are standardised and embedded across the team. 
  • Upskilling teams so they are accountable for their own processes and procedures and to seek capital efficiency throughout the delivery lifecycle.
  • Work within a leadership team to share resources and prioritise projects, effectively delivering projects, minimising risk and maximising value to the business.
  • Working closely with support teams in areas such as Project Controls, Contracts & Procurement and Health & Safety to safely execute your projects to realise the benefit to our operations.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • An Engineering degree in either Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronics
  • Experience in delivering portfolio of projects and/or Fire System related projects in heavy industry will be advantageous
  • Solid stakeholder engagement and facilitation skills
  • Understand how to work within a matrix organisation
  • Solid experience working within technical teams, project leadership roles and be confident in effectively leading, mentoring and coaching team members as well as interfacing with senior leaders
  • Multi discipline project management experience, with the ability to define and implement project improvement initiatives to maximise capital efficiency
  • Demonstrated complex problem-solving abilities to deliver solutions across an operation
  • A current manual WA Driver’s license.

Where you will be working

You will be based out of our head office located in Perth Central Park building, working Monday to Friday with site travel as required.
