Rio Tinto Energy Development (RTED) is a growing team within Development and Technology (D&T) that has recently been established. RTED will focus on the provision of green energy to not only decarbonise our existing industrial operations, but also provide optionality for Rio Tinto to be competitive in green energy and material markets to support future growth. RTED’s primary objectives include accelerating the development of future energy assets, securing high quality renewable development optionality and formulating a Group energy strategy.

About the role

The Pacific region for RTED includes Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand and represents a naturally advantaged region for low-cost renewable energy, creating significant opportunities for Rio Tinto. The Pacific Renewable Development team will enable new energy solutions to be delivered in the four locations, reducing scope 1 and 2 footprint, and protecting the cost position of existing assets. The energy solutions will be delivered in partnership, and require an understanding of both the renewable industry and commercial agreements.

Newly created, the Program Manager- Refinery electrical supply is accountable for the project management for the refinery energy solution within the Pacific Energy Development team. This role will provide project management, financial and strategic analysis support. 

Reporting to the Manager, Projects, you will:

  • As the RTED business partner to Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA), you will be accountable for the development and implementation of the energy solution to decarbonise the Gladstone refineries 
  • Establish and manage a multi-disciplinary execution team comprised of key internal (RTA/RTED/Business Analysis/Legal…etc) and external stakeholders (consultants/advisors)
  • Provide end-to-end project management of energy solution including project schedule and tracking, issues list and risk register, commercial analysis and internal approvals process
  • Undertake stakeholder engagement and communication including co-ordination of workstreams and facilitation of SteerCo meetings
  • Direct management of external service resources including financial, legal and technical advisors
  • Management of due diligence required for the energy solution
  • Support negotiations with counterparties
  • Understand broader commercial impacts arising from unexpected issues, troubleshoot, escalate, and resolve within a timely manner
  • Oversee the structuring and delivery of deal documentation such as strategy papers, information memorandum, management presentations, valuation analysis, purchaser co-ordination, and the preparation of information for client/bidder/stakeholder communications and terms sheet/ contracts
