We are looking for a Project Controller to perform project control services for Closure Research & Development (R&D) projects executed globally. This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading Mining company at the forefront of mining technology, where you will have the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and career.

You will work seamlessly with the Closure R&D team members including the Manager, Principal and Senior Advisors. You will also liaise with the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) and Rio Tinto Closure Finance Business Partner for reporting on R&D spend. You will connect with R&D, technology providers and contractors to assist the R&D Projects Leads in overseeing the cost and schedule performance of such technology and services providers against the collaboration agreements and purchase orders. The Project Controller will participate in project meetings, reviews, and internal team meetings.

Reporting to the you will be:

  • using Rio Tinto Closure R&D Portfolio and Project Management (PPM) tool to create the R&D proposals and projects profiles and record all projects’ cost, schedule and progress data.
  • creating the WBS in SAP once the project has been authorised, including SAP budget uploads
  • aligning vendors and R&D partners with Rio Tinto Closure R&D projects controls processes and procedures when Rio Tinto Closure R&D is leading the work
  • raising purchase orders, registering vendors in SAP, and preparing invoices for organisations providing financial support (co-funded R&D projects)
  • reviewing invoices from vendors against their progress and purchase order commitments.
  • performing cost controls tasks for the entire R&D portfolio on a regular basis, including actuals and commitments, forecasts, and in-kind contributions tracking
  • developing, maintaining, and controlling the schedules for the various scopes of R&D work, tracking their progress against milestones and deliverables
  • providing regular cost (cash and in-kind) and progress reports at project, program and portfolio level to the Manager Closure R&D and Principal and Senior Advisors R&D, to the Office of the Chief Scientist (OOCS), and to co-funding organisations in the frequency and format required as condition for their cash and/or in-kind contribution to the projects
  • supporting the implementation of effective contingency and change management process
  • identifying improvement opportunities for streamlining work processes
  • assisting in preparing cost reports for R&D tax claims.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A bachelor’s degree in related field is desirable combined with three or more years of experience in project controls
  • Robust understanding of project management and controls concepts
  • Knowledge and experience in the scheduling and progress management
  • Experience with earned value management, forecasting and accruals
  • Ability to work well within a team and independently as a self-starter
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Applied knowledge in change management
  • Experience with raising purchase orders and contract budget assignments
  • Proficient in SAP, Microsoft Project and Power BI
  • Project controls exposure to portfolios of tens of projects with disparate budgets (e.g. from a few tens of US$ thousands to a couple of US$ millions each)
