About the role
We are looking for a Project Engineer to be responsible for leading and the management of a cluster of capital projects for Weipa operations.
This role is a great opportunity for a technical engineer with leadership capability to manage all phases of assigned projects (from inception to completion) to optimise costs, minimise risk and deliver successful outcomes on time. Reporting to the Superintendent, Site Capital Projects, you will be:
- Developing and implementing projects in accordance with Rio Tinto project management framework
- Preparing project estimates, budgets, forecasts, schedules, and execution plans
- Prepare and report on project progress, budget, schedule, and risk
- Implement successful commissioning and operational readiness plans, responsible for ensuring projects meet end user requirements and design criteria
- Conducing project risk assessments and ensuring compliance to Rio Tinto standards and relevant legislation
- Development and implementation of project QA/QC programs and document control systems for ensuring construction activities adhere to project drawings, specifications, and safety standards
- Working closely with site project construction leaders to ensure safe and timely delivery of projects
- Collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure outcomes are aligned with site priorities and business strategy
- Responsible for conducting safety audits, assessments and assisting with the implementation of improvement strategies across the project team portfolio
- Providing engineering and technical support to the project construction teams and construction leaders as required
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Engineering degree qualified
- Demonstrated experience in end-to-end management of small and medium sized projects
- Strong communication and engagement skills
- Ability to link technical solutions with business strategy
- Focus on improvement, identifying best practice and transfer of knowledge

Where you will be working
Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.
Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.
The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
