The QAL Double Digestion study is finalizing the scope technical baseline. The study will shortly be moving into the Basic Engineering phase to develop a Class 3 Estimate. The Study will move Feasibility Study Gate Stage in Q1/Q2 next year. By necessity, the Project will be delivered in major tranches, with finalization of the second part currently forecast for completion in 2028.

We are looking for a Senior Project Engineer to manage delivery of the engineering on this complex multidiscipline brown-field engineering project, from Prefeasibility to close out, to ensure they satisfy stakeholder needs and expectations, that the scope considers lifecycle costs and can be executed to the in a safe, efficient, cost effective and timely manner.

Rio Tinto Aluminium is one of the largest producers of bauxite, alumina and primary aluminium, supplying across Australia, New Zealand and export markets.

This role is a great opportunity with long tenure for an experienced and motivated individual. Working Day Work, Monday - Friday and reporting to the QAL Double Digestion Project Manager, you will be:

  • Accountable for delivery of all engineering deliverables and works required to execute the project in accordance with the Project Execution Plan.
  • Responsible for developing the Project Engineering Plan, which will follow the Rio Tinto Project Management system for initiating, planning, execution, monitoring, and control and close out of engineering works.
  • In collaboration with the project manager, working to develop a control budget for Owners Engineering as well as Engineering Service provider Engineering for the active and future project stages.
  • Developing, reviewing engineering scope of work documents, and active participation in selection of the engineering service providers for completion of the design works.
  • Managing document control on project
  • Developing and Managing (indirectly) a network of suitably qualified Rio Tinto & QAL Engineers to ensure that all engineering works are reviewed against Australian, Rio Tinto and QAL standards as applicable.
  • Managing Procurement process in conjunction with Rio Tinto Procurement to source and evaluate tenders, for both supply and services for permanent plant.
  • Managing packaging of engineering deliverables for construction contractors
  • Managing review of Vendor Data
  • Managing (technical oversight) of Supplier quality process
  • Managing (technical oversight) of Field Engineering during Construction
  • Monitoring and controlling engineering throughout execution and providing handover following implementation. 
  • Supporting Rio Tinto Investment Gate activities 

What you will bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering – RPEQ eligible
  • Demonstrated experience in all project engineering activities throughout the project life cycle
  • Demonstrated experience in Engineering design, fabrication and construction on an operational production facility.
  • Demonstrated experience in multidiscipline works in a brownfield environment.
  • Ability to work with and manage consultants to execute defined packages of work 

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Previous experience in Alumina refinery design and operations
  • Previous experience in Rio Tinto project delivery 
  • Previous experience with QAL site
