About the role
The decarbonisation of the steel industry between now and 2050 is likely to change the iron ore supply chain as we know it. The next 20 years will see the largest and fastest change in iron and steelmaking technology the industry has seen in decades. Positioning Rio Tinto as sustainability leaders is key in realising our ambitions, strategy and growth agenda. The Steel Decarbonisation team is at the forefront of this and will shape pathways for Rio Tinto’s iron ores in a decarbonised iron and steelmaking future.
The purpose of the Rio Tinto Steel Decarbonisation (RTSD) team is to:
- Protect the long-term value of Rio Tinto’s iron ore through development and scale up of cost-effective technologies that utilise our iron ores in the future low-carbon steel industry
- To position Rio Tinto to participate in the nascent green iron market, and
- To provide steel decarbonisation analysis and intelligence to support decisions on Rio Tinto’s future iron ore resource portfolio, product strategy, and renewable energy development.
Success will be driven through the development and execution of a pipeline of technical and commercial options, developed through deep partnerships across the value chain from ore body to steel end users
We are looking for the Biomass Ironmaking Project Lead to head the Biomass Ironmaking project team to create a pathway to generate both social and commercial benefit from the technology Rio Tinto has developed.
This role is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual who is self-driven, pro-active and passionate about the sustainability area and excels in stakeholder engagement, has strong interpersonal and communication skills, and shows initiative and discipline to delivery to plan, priorities and budget. This role will engage with a number of internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver the opportunity the biomass ironmaking technology presents.
Reporting to the GM – Steel Decarbonisation Pacific, you will:
- Need to be credible in the market, Rio Tinto, the team and with customers
- Lead, manage and motivate the Biomass Ironmaking team, and the key stakeholders to maintain the timeline of the Biomass Ironmaking Project project
- Ensure there is effective and timely communications
- Be responsible for the content of the Biomass Ironmaking Project presentations both internally and externally
- Ensure all aspects of the project planning, coordination and resources are available for the project to move from one phase to the next and when external resources are required
- Ensure there is a clear pathway, with objectives, milestones and timelines
- Be an advocate of the Steel Decarbonisation team; in behaviours and leadership
- Work closely with key stakeholders to articulate a compelling Biomass Ironmaking Project strategy and overview of all associated workplans / initiatives
- Manage the Biomass Ironmaking Project communications internally and externally
What you will need for the role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- A strong knowledge in the iron ore and steel industry
- Knowledge regarding alternative iron making technology would be beneficial, but not mandatory
- Excellent project management skills
- Strong business and strategic acumen
- Strong interpersonal skills, in conjunction with good presentation abilities
- Assertive and results driven: bias to action; a driver
- Able to influence team and work with senior stakeholders
- Strong communication and influencing skills to gain commitment from your team, customers, and key stakeholders to successfully deliver on your goals
- Tertiary education;
- At least 10 years of commercial / project experience,
- Flexible in working hours given the global stakeholders in the Biomass Ironmaking Project
