This is a unique, challenging and extremely rewarding opportunity for a technical professional to join the Hydrogen Calcination project team at our Yarwun Refinery in Gladstone.

The first 12 months will require fortnightly travel to Brisbane during the working week for this role, Monday to Friday. The role will gradually transition to site based upon completion of detailed design and award of construction work packages.

Reporting to the Project Manager, your role and responsibilities will include:

  • Demonstrate a visible and active commitment to HSE in design and implementation
  • Design and engineering coordination during Execution stage, up to completion of detailed design and transition to Yarwun site for construction
  • Review and liaison with professional engineering service providers, specialist consultants and third-party interface management with electrolyser partner, Sumitomo 
  • Develop engineering scopes for various contracting and procurement packages
  • Working with RTP to evaluate bids and progress contract award for various packages
  • Assist the Hydrogen Calcination Senior Project Lead with the day-to-day management of the project that includes:
    • Attending vendor weekly meetings
    • Reviewing drawings and documentation
    • Schedule reviews and updates, including input into cash forecasts (Project and Vendor schedules)
    • Working alongside the RTA Project Control team to generate required documentation to manage project funds, reporting cycle and change management.
    • Participating in design reviews and HAZOPs.
    • Manage the implementation of items identified during design reviews and HAZOPs with both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Provide input and coordination support during construction phase for various work packages at RTA Yarwun
    • Support handover initiatives with RTA Yarwun by providing input into operational readiness plans, commissioning plans up to handover acceptance, in preparation for Start-up.

What you’ll bring 

  • A demonstrated commitment to the safety of yourself and your team 
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with the aim to obtaining RPEQ status by end of the project.
  • Experience working in Oil & Gas, Petrochem Refinery or Hydrogen Production and/or Storage.
  • Experience in Calcination plant operations and/or design is advantageous but can be developed
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills and ability to coordinate with a range of internal and external professionals including engineers, design consultancies, suppliers etc.

Where you’ll be working

With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.

Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
