Project Manager Decarbonisation - Off Grid Power Systems

The Decarbonisation team is the single synthesizer across Fortescue between FFI (including Green Industry and WAE), FMG and related business partners and suppliers. The team’s objectives include the design and implementation of a globally available portfolio of technically and commercially viable decarbonisation solutions. Our immediate focus is to deliver real zero emissions in our Australian iron ore operations by 2030. The Decarbonisation team consists of a mix of core central roles complimented by dedicated and experienced personnel across related functions and operations within the business to ensure joint ownership of optimal solutions from design to deployment.
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Project Manager to lead our Off Grid Green Energy Generation System development. As the Project Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing the design, planning, execution, and successful completion of zero emissions solutions for off grid power generation systems. You will be supported by a dedicated team of professionals, coordinating their efforts and ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet our real zero 2030 decarb target. You will work closely with FMG operational team strongly focus to delivering a solution that meet our operational requirements and cost expectation without compromising high quality and health & safety standards.
This is a senior role where the successful candidate complements leadership and strategic thinking with a proven record of collaboratively delivering value adding initiatives successfully into operations.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop, in collaboration with the design team and external consultant, a real zero, off grid power generation system that provides reliability, performance, operational and capital sustainability without compromising the highest level of quality and safety requirements.
- Drive and coordinate the development in collaboration with the design team of a safe and efficient zero emission thermal generation system needed to sustain off grid application power requirements.
- Investigate and implement the use of green fuel (HVO, H2, NH3 etc.) in existing or new technology to identify the best efficient way to generate zero emission thermal power.
- Conduct feasibility studies and risk assessments to identify potential obstacles during the design and implementation of real zero remote power generation system into operation and develop contingency plans to mitigate risks.
- Develop, define, and execute test and validation requirements for the proposed real zero remote power generation solution to prove the performance and reliability of the system.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive project management plan, including project scope, objectives, timelines, resource allocation, and budgeting.
- Manage project contracts, including negotiations, procurement, and vendor selection, to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of goods and services.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, such as operations, engineering, finance, and regulatory compliance, to ensure alignment and effective coordination of project activities.
- Contribute to operational readiness.
- Ensure integrated telemetry, data and analytics systems are developed across proposed real zero remote power solution to facilitate measurement-based management.
- Monitor project progress, track milestones, and ensure adherence to project schedules and budgetary constraints.
- Interface with OEMs, OTMs and vendors as required.
- Working collaboratively with site and central teams on the design, justification, and implementation of different ways of operating and/or applying non-hydrocarbon based fixed and mobile real zero power generation solutions.
- Realise value from emissions sources we stand down through re-use or resale of existing assets to optimized capital investment.
- Drive effective communication, stakeholder engagement and reporting, ensuring that project goals, timelines, and deliverables are effectively communicated to all relevant parties highlighting key challenges, and recommending corrective actions as needed.
- Work closely with FMG’s electrical infrastructure and energy operations teams to ensure all solutions are integrated and considered as part of overall energy management.
- Work closely with FMG’s procurement and contractor teams to assure sustainability and availability of proposed green fuel on site at affordable price.
- Stay abreast of related green technology trends to ensure solution direction is tested and optimal.
- Foster a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement, ensuring that all projects comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and best practices to assure compliance and standardization.
Qualifications and skills required:
- Degree qualification in engineering or related technical discipline
- Complementary qualifications in solar, battery or thermal generation technology are preferred.
- Proven experience in successfully managing medium-scale micro-grid or thermal generation projects, including planning, execution, and delivery.
- Strong technical knowledge and understanding of micro-grid power generation processes, equipment, and systems including efficiency optimization.
- Strong knowledge of renewable energy systems, ammonia or hydrogen technology would be highly advantageous with a strong passion for these fields and ability to quickly learn new technology.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse team towards achieving project goals.
- Solid understanding of project management methodologies, tools, and best practices including technical and commercial skills, financial acumen, negotiation experience, and risk assessment.
- High level of organizational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, able to organise and deal with multiple projects at once that are in various stages of progress.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficient in project management & planning software.
- Highly efficient, work with a sense of urgency, high energy levels and enthusiasm
- Strong ambition, passion and personal drive to meet objectives, with an open, transparent style and flexible approach. Ability to work under pressure and takes personal accountability.
