We are looking for a Rail specialist who thrives on improving Rail maintenance and operations performance using effective analysing and influencing skills. The operation is situated amongst three indigenous communities and the operations are on Aboriginal land.
This role is a great opportunity for an operational or maintenance leader for Rail Operation. This involves operating and maintaining our Rail Rolling stock, Track machines, Track maintenance and Operations which services the Andoom Ore Stream from Andoom to EW unload.

This role has 4 direct reports and a workforce of over 30 employees plus contractors. Working a 44 hour week on a 9 day fortnight (Mon to Fri or Mon to Thurs) and reporting to the Fixed Plant and Rail Superintendent, you will be:
- Tasked with coordinating Rail Operations to safely meet targeted throughput
- Tasked with coordinating maintenance shift crews to safely implement Planned and Breakdown maintenance tasks
- Tasked with maintaining the track health to ensure the rolling stock can safely operate
- Coach and develop your crew leaders and step up crew leaders to continuously improve operations and maintenance
- Provide peer support to achieve the broader Weipa Portfolio objectives
What you will bring
- Ability to promote, mentor and drive a diverse way of thinking and ability to challenge the status quo
- A strong commitment to Health Safety, Environment and local community
- Strong analytical and people skills as well as a positive attitude
- A manual ‘C’ class drivers license
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Previous leadership experience
- Tertiary qualifications within an appropriate discipline or background
- Understanding of the technical aspects involved, in rail operations and performance management
- Experience using business improvement methodologies such as : KAIZEN, Lean Six Sigma and Change Management

Where you will be working
Rio Tinto Weipa is located 900km north-west of Cairns on the Gulf of Carpentaria and has been operating for over 50 years. Construction of the Amrun mining operation, located 40 kilometres southwest of Weipa, was completed in late 2018 expanding our bauxite operations to continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits.
