Regional Director, Government Relations - Sub-Saharan Africa

Work location: Sub-Saharan Africa

Roster: Monday to Friday

Reporting to the General Manager, Government Relations, the Regional Director is responsible for preparing and implementing Fortescue’s project political stakeholder engagement plans across a suite of new energy projects and business opportunities. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide government relations advice for identified projects across the Sub-Saharan Africa region. 

  • Act as trusted advisor to the Regional Presidents.  

  • Provide advice to the project and regional teams on identified political risks and the development of associated mitigation plans. 

  • Lead/support the engagement of governmental and other political stakeholders to facilitate the projects. 

  • Support country teams to develop and take forward advocacy plans to promote Fortescue projects and secure required government support and incentives  

  • Develop and maintain a detailed understanding of energy & hydrogen-related policies and regulation in key countries  

  • Build and maintain relationships with key political stakeholders with an interest in Fortescue energy projects. 

  • Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders as they engage with external political stakeholders.  

  • Prepare government relations communications and materials for political stakeholder engagement.  

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Educated to degree level (Law, International Relations or Politics desirable.) 

  • Significant government relations experience within the energy sector, and/or a background working in government and policy formulation. 

  • Experience of working with a diverse range of people across all levels including government officials and senior business leaders across Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • Proven track record of building strong governmental relationships. 

  • Sensitivity to the local cultures and values across the region. 

  • High level of professional communication skills, including written communication. 

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills - ability to interact with a diverse range of people in a professional manner, representing the company. 

  • Demonstrated ability to operate in dynamic delivery environments. 

  • Ability to thrive in a fast moving and ambiguous environment.  

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a regional government relations role. 

  • Excellent computer literacy including Microsoft Office suite, predominately in Word and Excel.
