We are looking for a Regional Geochemist to provide geochemical support, training and technical delivery for exploration activities within Australasia (AAR). You will join the Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX) AAR team in a challenging role that offers an opportunity to participate in discovery, third party reviews, provide guidance on technical assurance and geochemical best practice in sampling, assaying and QAQC, and support the project teams with data integration and interpretation.

Reporting to the Principal Geochemist AAR and working in an exciting environment within the AAR Geochemistry team, you will be:

  • Providing technical assurance through geochemical specialist advice during project planning, project execution and data review stages
  • Working with project team members to interpret and integrate geochemical data to identify drill targets or additional geochemical requirements 
  • Working with other generative team geoscientists to provide integrated interpretations with recommendations on Joint Venture opportunities
  • Supporting planned and active exploration programs with selection of appropriate field and drill sampling methods, recommending appropriate analytical techniques, designing quality assurance programs, providing oversight monitoring of quality control data, and engaging with laboratories to ensure RTX receives the highest quality data in a timely manner
  • Improving the AAR exploration portfolio through interpreting results of complex 2D and 3D datasets and applying these interpretations to generate new targets, identify extensions to known mineralisation, and to deliver improved testing of existing targets
  • Developing in-house technical capability of our geoscientists, embedding both RTX and industry best practice, by sharing knowledge, building skills, coaching and mentoring
  • Keeping track of industry developments and identifying opportunities to implement value adding techniques with the ability to impact discovery

What you’ll bring

  • A strong desire for furthering your own and the teams technical development through working with others within RTX, the broader Rio Tinto organisation and external experts
  • Strong engagement and communication skills, the ability to present, mentor and collaborate with geoscientists and data managers at all levels, and to produce high quality reports and presentations
  • Experience in mineral and metal exploration, surface sampling techniques, drilling techniques, analytical methods, QAQC monitoring programs, design and implementation of exploration programs, and a detailed knowledge of geochemical principals
  • Experience in various geochemical data interpretation methods e.g. exploratory data analysis, multivariate methods, some classical statistics, supervised and unsupervised interpretative methods
  • University degree in geochemistry, geology, chemistry or equivalent program required. 
  • Proficiency in ioGAS, ArcGIS (or other GIS platform), and Leapfrog Geo (or other 3D package) software
  • Proficiency in English (verbal and written) is required
  • The ability and desire to participate in field activities when necessary

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Post graduate qualifications or industry experience with a focus on geochemistry (MSc, PhD) preferable
  • A superior knowledge of geochemical techniques rooted in several years of direct field experience across a variety of geological environments and a range of commodity styles
  • Experience in field portable instrumentation (pXRF, etc.) and spectral data technologies (SWIR and FTIR) in terms of data acquisition, management and analysis.
  • Some experience with R and/or Power BI
