About the Roles
We are looking for talented people who are eager to join our company in February 2024 to learn and develop through our unique Apprenticeship Program. Our exciting program aims to cultivate skills through specially designed learning pathways which include both on and off the job training, with program participants having access to world leading technology and industry leaders.
During the program you will work towards a nationally recognised qualification, whilst receiving on-going support from Supervisors, Tradespeople, Development Advisors, and Indigenous Support Officers to ensure you are set up for success, establishing a long-term career within our business.

Roles are for applicants currently residing in Western Australia. Rio Tinto offers Fly in and fly out options from Perth, our regional FIFO hubs, or you must be living in our residential towns where applicable.
To be eligible for this opportunity you must:
- Have the right to work in Australia.
- Hold a current C class manual drivers’ licence with a minimum of red ‘P’ plates by 1 Feb 2024.
- FIFO applicants must be 18 years or older and Residential applicants must be 17 years or older from the 1st of February 2024.
- Ideally have completed a Pre-App in your choice of discipline

We offer a range of apprenticeship opportunities which include:
- Automotive Electrician – Certificate III in Automotive Electrical Technology Automotive electricians specialise in repairing, servicing and installing electrical systems, ensuring critical mobile equipment like our giant haul trucks can keep running to transport iron ore. Ignite your passion for the automotive industry!
- Communication Technician – Certificate III in Electronics and Communications Communication technicians test, overhaul and connect radio communications, fibre optics and operational and corporate network equipment to maintain communication networks across our mine sites. Play a key role in keeping us connected!
- Electrician (Fixed Plant) – Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician Electricians are integral in keeping our plants running, our workshops powered and our camps comfortable, by installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment and systems. Be part of powering our mines into the future!
- Fabrication (Boilermaker) – Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade Fabricators are highly skilled in precisely preparing, assembling and repairing mining equipment including frames and truck parts using welding and thermal cutting equipment. Have an eye for detail? We want you!
- Heavy Duty Diesel Fitter (Heavy Mobile Equipment) – Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology Heavy duty diesel fitters are part of the Mobile Equipment Maintenance team and work on the big equipment like haul trucks, diggers and more. They learn diagnostic, fault-finding and repairing techniques to prolong the life of Rio Tinto’s important mobile assets. Fancy working on the biggest trucks in the world.
- Mechanical Fitter (Fixed Plant) – Certificate III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade Mechanical fitters work on equipment that is fixed to the ground such as crushers, conveyors and reclaimers. Our fixed plant equipment is vital for supporting the processing, transporting and loading of our iron ore across our operations. Curious about engineering? Look no further!
Our Process:
Step one: Apply and complete all application questions.
Step two: On successful selection you will be required to complete on-line assessments. Please ensure you access your emails (including spam) regularly, to avoid disappointment, please complete these assessments within the allocated timeframes given.
Step three: Selected candidates will be contacted by a Recruitment Team member who will validate your application and invite you to a Recruitment Day to meet with the Hiring Leaders and be assessed for the role you have chosen. Successful candidates will be required to complete a Pre-employment Medical, which includes a drug and alcohol test as well as additional background checks.
