Deployment Lead, Safe Production Systems

  • Play a fundamental role in leading the Rio Tinto Safe Production System deployment
  • Help us meet our aspirational goal of being THE BEST OPERATOR
  • Apply your creativity, ability to challenge and do things differently
  • Permanent FIFO (5,2,4,3) role from Perth to various sites across the Pilbara

About the role

All progress begins with pioneers. At Rio Tinto, it begins with you.

Together with our people, we’re designing a system that takes the best practices from every corner of Rio Tinto and other industries under one roof to become the Rio Tinto Safe Production System (RTSPS). We are involving our workforce in its design. It will be built with input from the frontline. It will be how we operate our assets, manage performance and support our people. We see a huge potential to simplify how we work, stabilise our operations, collaborate and share best practice.

You will be there from the start. As a Deployment Lead, you will be part of one of our most significant transformation programs in recent history. You will play a fundamental role in leading the RTSPS deployment team through all stages of the RTSPS roll-out before transitioning the sites to RTSPS business as usual.

You'll join a newly created team of high performing individuals, each bringing their own complimentary skill set, background and leadership experiences to form a truly diverse RTSPS deployment team.

This is a great opportunity for those who put people at the center, have a change mindset and a genuine interest in our fundamental principle of being the best operator. You may come from an operational, technical or functional background with demonstrated leadership experience in driving change in an operational environment and developing capability. You will be managing the work of the deployment team while simultaneously upskilling team members and growing the RTSPS capability across the business.

Reporting to the General Manager, Operational Excellence, you will:

  • Deliver the RTSPS framework and practices through deployment stage gates
  • Resource the RTSPS deployment team and set up for success ahead of mobilising to diagnostic phase on site
  • Manage deployment team logistics and deliverables to ensure quality delivery at read-outs, tracking and reporting
  • Ensure integration of approaches (operational excellence, mindsets and behaviours, change management, safety) and critical thinking are applied to planning the implementation of practices
  • Assess competence, provide feedback and facilitate capability development for members of the deployment team
  • Make recommendations with regards to RTSPS accreditation of team members
  • Identify and manage stakeholders who are impacted, including site GM, site and functional leadership teams, those beyond the site, RTSPS sponsors and leadership
  • Remove barriers and escalate issues on behalf of the site-based teams
  • Contribute to the refinement of the RTSPS deployment approach and practice development

We are an open, connected global team that includes some of the industry’s best and brightest minds. We offer competitive, performance-focused remuneration and a wide range of benefits to reward your contribution. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop and grow your career are broad and exciting.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Commitment to RTSPS mindsets and behaviours (transparency, simplicity, supportive leadership, empowerment and continuous improvement)
  • Leadership experience, including leading change
  • Capability development
  • Ability to develop partnerships and manage a variety of stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate new ideas, influence others and manage conflict
  • Project management experience
  • Well-developed analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Experiences in teaching, training or coaching
  • Current C Class driver’s license

Although not essential, you may also bring:

  • Lean qualifications or experience

About Rio Tinto

Every idea, every innovation, every little thing the world calls ‘progress’ begins with a first step, and someone willing to take it: explorers, inventors, entrepreneurs. Pioneers.

For nearly 150 years, Rio Tinto has been a company of pioneers –generations of people spanning the globe, all with the grit and vision to produce materials essential to human progress. Our iron ore has shaped skylines from Shanghai to Sydney. Our aluminium –the world’s first to be certified “responsible” –helps planes fly and makes cars lighter. Our copper helps wind turbines power cities and our boron helps feed the world, and explore the universe. Our diamonds help us celebrate the best parts of life.

Where you’ll be working

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, we own an integrated portfolio of iron ore assets: a world-class, integrated network of 16 mines, four independent port terminals, a 1,700 kilometre rail network and related infrastructure –all designed to respond rapidly to changes in demand. We are one of the world's leading producers and exporters of iron ore.

Every Voice Matters

At Rio Tinto, we particularly welcome and encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, women, the LGBTI+ community, mature workers, people with disabilities and people from different cultural backgrounds.

We are committed to an inclusive environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves. We want our people to feel that all voices are heard, all cultures respected and that a variety of perspectives are not only welcome –they are essential to our success. We treat each other fairly and with dignity regardless of race, gender, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, age, sexual orientation or anything else that makes us different.
