About the role

This is a full-time permanent opportunity.

Reporting to the Manager Mining Engineering at Appin, you will be responsible for the development, governance and continuous improvement of Illawarra Metallurgical Coal’s (IMC) safety management standards, procedures, tools and programs to enable the operations to effectively manage safety, training and risk. This role leads a team of Safety, Risk and Training professionals

You will provide specialist & strategic support to operations enabling execution of the Safety Programs and Management Systems.

Key accountabilities –

  • Create and foster an inclusive workplace with a strong culture of care and accountability
  • Provide visible safety leadership by coaching to leaders, employees and contractors in safe behaviours and routines
  • Enabling delivery of the IMC’s safety management standards, procedures, tools  and programs to support the operations to effectively manage safety and risk.
  • Lead, coach and enable delivery of work through the Safety, Risk and Training site team
  • Lead and implement improvement initiatives to streamline and leverage key opportunities within the Business & Operations
  • Engage and collaborate with business stakeholders including front-line and management to ensure execution of programs
  • Accountable for analysis and accurate and reporting of safety performance, trends and the progress of safety improvement programs
  • Collaborate with other Safety, Risk and Training teams across IMC and South32 to deliver improvement initiatives
  • Lead and coach the safety, risk and training team on site

About you

Key to success in this role is your strong leadership skills and your proven experience working in a similar role within the Mining or Heavy industry.  

To be considered for the role, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Science/Engineering/ Safety) or relevant degree /Diploma
  • Experience working at an underground coal mine (desirable)
  • Demonstrated ability to influence groups of internal stakeholders through effective data analysis and communication skills
  • Improvement focus – identifying best practice and transferring knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability in contributing to strategic visions and leading change in a heavy industry environment

Location

This position will be based at the Appin mine which is in the southern coalfields of New South Wales. The mine is located near the coastal city of Wollongong, which is approximately 30 kms away and is approximately 75 kilometres southwest of Sydney.
