Fortescue is now consistently producing 175-180 million tonnes of iron ore per year and has an exciting future ahead as it diversifies from a pure play iron ore producer to a green renewables and resources company.

The company is scheduled to commence production at its Iron Bridge magnetite mine in mid-2022.

Iron Bridge is set to deliver 22mtpa of high grade 67% Fe magnetite, low impurity premium concentrate product. Located 145km by road south of Port Hedland, the mine will deliver a globally competitive low capital intensity and operating cost, innovative process design and industry-leading energy efficient operation.

Senior Mining Engineer – 2 Year Planning

Work Location: Iron Bridge - Fortescue’s Iron Bridge project is located on the traditional lands of the Nyamal people.

Roster : FIFO (4/3) with some Perth time

Summary of role:

We are currently looking for enthusiastic and high performing Mine Planning Engineer to join the Iron Bridge operations planning team. Reporting to Superintendent Support Planning, this role is responsible for providing medium term mine planning support to our Iron Bridge mine operations. You will provide pit and production schedule, mine design, annual budget plan & quarterly 2 year mine reforecast plans.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Supervise a team of Mining Engineers
  • Optimise and deliver operational mining schedule for 2 years and related infrastructure designs to maximise the value of the business
  • Scheduling mining and other associate activities to varied planning horizons
  • Timely delivery of plans and schedules to meet internal delivery timelines
  • Costing of mine plans for use in budgeting and forecasting activities
  • Liaise with support functions, including Approvals, Geology, Geotechnical, Surface Water and Hydrogeology to understand risk and opportunities to the operation and to enable timely achievement of mining milestones
  • Assessment of mining methodology options for both cost and productivity metrics
  • Communicating plans, options, and designs with relevant stakeholders
  • Delivering product quality, pit progression, waste schedules, fleet requirements and other technical guidance as required
  • Liaise with Strategic Planning Department to ensure alignment to Iron Bridge long term Mine Plan
  • Identify risk and opportunities that may impact business plan

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or similar
  • Minimum 6 Years proven experience as a Mining Engineer, preferably with exposure to 3 months planning, 2-5 years planning or strategic planning
  • Strong interpersonal skills with both operational and technical
  • Practical approach to engineering and design problems
  • Ability to work with Block Models
  • Knowledge in open pit mining preferably in deep pit (hard rock / base metal operations)
  • Computer proficiency (Excel, MS Office, Vulcan, Deswik, Datamine, Mine planning package - Alastri, Xact/Xpac or similar)
  • Strong analytical & data query skills with attention to detail; Experience with Tableau / Power BI & knowledge of Python/SQL programming will be advantageous
  • Team orientation and strong ability to take initiatives
  • Experience using collaborative platforms like SharePoint, Trello, Confluence, Microsoft Power Apps, etc. will be advantageous
  • Excellent communication/presentation skills with the ability to convey technical detail, potential risks and opportunities within the planned works to a variety of stakeholders
