We are looking for a Senior Advisor – Climate Change Reporting to deliver on time greenhouse gas and energy compliance reporting obligations and legal requirements for the Pacific sites.

This is a great opportunity for a professional to facilitate third-party validation and strive to improve efficiency and quality reporting. This role will draw on your strong technical capability, attention to detail and communication, and your passion for reporting to ensure that our business meets the legal requirements related to greenhouse gas emissions.

Reporting to the Manager Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI), working closely with the Director Climate Change and working in a challenging and exciting environment within the Environment & Sustainability Team, you will:

  • Develop and maintain a network of stakeholders working together to ensure the sites meet their legal requirements related to greenhouse gas emissions (National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting (NGER), Renewable Energy Target (RET), Safeguard Mechanism, NZ Emissions Trading Scheme, etc.).
  • In collaboration with the Decarbonisation Office Controllership, maintain and improve a strong framework of controls around GHG & energy data reporting at Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) Pacific Sites including data completeness, source data, trend and transcription error checks, maintaining up to date reporting documentation and spreadsheets.
  • Lead or participate in third party audits at all operational sites within RTA Pacific for various schemes: RenewAL, START, NGER, ERF, Safeguard mechanism, RET, ASI, etc.
  • Track and communicate plant’s performance.
  • Be the NGER contact person for Rio Tinto Limited (RTL) in Australia. Lead and manage the work plan, compliance obligations and RTL submission with business representatives and HSES Info Systems reporting team.
  • Be the primary contact with Clean Energy Regulator (CER) for RTL and RTA Pacific sites NGER reports.
  • Support the Rio Tinto representatives on different industry associations and provide input into Rio Tinto and industry associations submissions to government on changes to climate change legislation, guidance and methods.
  • Lead or participate to projects to improve compliance to legal requirements and/or to improve quality of reporting.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and other team members
  • Bachelor’s degree / qualification in engineering, environment or science
  • Strong communication, problem solving and analysis skills
  • Ability to work independently, lead and manage projects and auditors
  • Skills and experience with outward facing roles, professional relationships, government organisations or industry bodies
  • Effective time management and personal organisational skills – autonomous approach to work
  • Capacity to work in a matrix organisation with multiple internal and external stakeholders and build effective relationships

It will be beneficial if you have:

  • Deep knowledge and/or practical experience in aluminium smelting or alumina refinery operational sites
  • Knowledge of GHG emissions quantification methodologies
  • Six sigma, statistics and/or business improvement experience
