We are seeking a Senior Advisor Government Approvals to play a key role in obtaining approvals and to provide advice on obligations under key State environmental legislation. We have a full-time opportunity for a 24-month/2-year term within the team; part-time will be considered for the right candidate – please indicate if you are seeking full-time or part-time (and preferred hours) in your application.

Reporting to the Manager Government Approvals, you will be responsible for:

  • Project managing multiple approvals under Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, the Mining Act 1978 and the Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914.
  • Engaging with internal and external stakeholders, including Government agencies and Traditional Owner groups, on specific approvals.
  • Participating in Resource Development specific planning, scheduling & studies to provide high quality government approvals advice and inputs in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Actively contributing to and collaborating with the Government Approvals team to share knowledge and learnings and to provide relevant peer-to-peer support.

This role will be part of the Rio Tinto iron ore Government Approvals team, which delivers approvals for Rio Tinto’s mines, ports, infrastructure, resource development and renewable projects. This role will specifically support the Rio Tinto Resource Development team by providing advice, strategies and delivering approvals for rehabilitation and drilling works across the Pilbara region.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Extensive experience in and deep understanding of Western Australia environmental approvals, specifically Part V of the Environmental Protection Act 1986, the Mining Act 1978 and the Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914.
  • Ability to think and operated strategically to deliver long term rehabilitation objectives.
  • Ability to work flexibly in a fast-paced role, managing deliverables and stakeholders whilst maintaining autonomy and self-motivation.
  • The skills to communicate, consult and collaborate effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent technical writing and review skills, attention to detail and an ability to interpret and problem solve complex issues towards an outcome in a scheduled timeframe.
  • The ability to work effectively independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • A Tertiary qualification in an environmental discipline or a related field or equivalent industry experience.

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience in implementation and delivery of approvals for exploration drilling or resource definition.
  • Experience in fast paced and challenging project environments with multiple competing stakeholder requirements.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience or exposure within mining or resources industry approvals.
  • Experience or understanding of GIS software and Microsoft applications.

Where you will be working

This role is Perth based, with opportunities to undertake site visits as required to fulfill the role.
