About the role

We are looking for a Senior Advisor Indigenous Participation to join our team based in Gladstone. The role works to strengthen the relationship between Rio Tinto and Traditional Owners in the Gladstone region, including increasing Indigenous participation and cultural competence and ensuring adherence to heritage standards and commitments

Reporting to the Business Partner Regional Development you will:

  • Build strong relationships with Traditional Owners and a detailed understanding of community needs, aspirations and challenges, through regular engagement

  • Play a key role with the Business Partner to develop and implement a Regional Economic Development strategy for Rio Tinto in Gladstone, with a particular focus on increasing Indigenous participation and procurement.

  • Be the interface between Rio Tinto Aluminium assets and functional teams and Traditional Owners, collaborating to understand engagement needs and coordinating engagement activities

  • Working with Traditional Owners striving for co-design approach

  • Maintain Rio Tinto’s cultural heritage management plans and systems, including training, and updates where needed

  • Plan and deliver work to improve the cultural competence and capacity of the Rio Tinto Aluminium Gladstone workforce

  • Represent Rio Tinto at Indigenous community forums to build relationships and identify opportunities for collaboration

  • Deliver strategies and programs that meet the needs of community stakeholders and the business

What you will bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your colleagues

  • Extensive experience in building relationships with Traditional Owners and across Indigenous communities and stakeholders

  • Skills and experience in influencing internal and external stakeholders, project management, compliance and risk management

  • Excellent people, teamwork and communication skills

  • Ability to manage complex and conflicting priorities

  • Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: Indigenous engagement and participation programmes (including employment and procurement), agreement making and implementation, cultural heritage, State and Federal heritage legislation requirements
