Our Telfer operation in Australia is now recruiting for the position of Senior Advisor- Safety

Telfer Operations

Located in the Great Sandy Desert in East Pilbara, Western Australia, Telfer is a fly in out fly out operation from Perth which recognises the importance of work-life balance.  We provide comfortable, well-furnished rooms with Foxtel, along with site offers of quality food with healthy options, medical care, sports, and recreation activities.  Families are welcomed several times a year to open days to support our community feel at Telfer.

Who we are looking for

Reporting into the Manager- Safety, Health & Risk the Senior Safety advisor will provide safety leadership, advice and support ensuring the provision of a safe and healthy work environment with experienced and competent Safety advisers across the Telfer Operations.

With a team of up to four direct reports, you will lead the team by mentoring and coaching Safety Advisors whilst maintaining high standards of performance, fostering a proactive approach to safety and promote a ‘lead by example’ safety culture.

Other key deliverables include:

  • Working to ensure the overall achievement of Telfer’s health and safety plans and objectives as well as ensuring all safety related documents remain up to date and aligned with Newmont and the WHS legislative requirements.
  • Promote open communication and consultation by attending a range of safety forums including prestart and tool box meetings
  • Monitor and audit incident investigations and provide feedback to the workforce on key learnings from incident investigations 
  • Champion the site’s Safety Improvement initiative by modelling Fatal Risk Management and demonstrating Visible Felt Safety Leadership in the field
  • Support internal safety audit processes across Telfer’s site fatality risk profile in all areas including contract business partners
  • Support the site’s Critical Control Verification program and monitor activities ensuring quality pre-task risk assessments are being carried out by workers
  • Ensure clear visibility of planning, tracking and reporting on safety performance progress to meet performance targets

As the ideal candidate, you will be an experienced Senior Safety Advisor who possesses a ‘can do’ attitude and a strong commitment to cultural change initiatives. You will have exceptional leadership skills from both a team and safety perspective.

Other required skills and experiences include:

  • Extensive experience in a similar role within the mining industry
  • Extensive experience in Safety systems, auditing and incident investigation
  • Lead ICAM or similar RCA incident investigation experience (preferred)
  • Leadership experience with effective organisational, time management and prioritisation skills
  • Occupational Health, Hygiene or Safety Degree or Diploma or Cert IV in Occupational Health and Safety (or related area)
  • Formal auditing qualifications (preferred)
  • WA Unrestricted C Class Drivers licence (manual)
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong computer literacy skills, particularly in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
