Rio Tinto has a long history of being a leader in innovation and the development and deployment of technology within the mining industry. Innovation will continue to play a critical role in improving health and safety outcomes, delivering new mines of the future, and decarbonising the industry.

Our Digital Transformation team is part of the Research, Development & Technology (RDT) division of Rio Tinto Iron Ore. We are highly collaborative and work in close partnership with Rio Tinto’s global R&D community and external bodies such as research institutes, suppliers, and industry partners. We have a key role to play in enabling digital transformation across our business.

As a team, we are courageous in the pursuit of innovation, curious in the development of emerging technologies and caring towards our people and our partners.

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Advisor to join the Digital Transformation team within our RDT division.

The primary work of the Digital Transformation team is to steward digital and technology based products through their development lifecycle, with a particular focus on leading Pilot and Demonstration phases. By applying design thinking techniques during project shaping and ensuring the full integration and support requirements of a product are fully considered, you will champion new ways of working on behalf of end users. Initially supporting the Digitally Integrated Mine suite of technologies, you will be responsible for facilitating demonstration trials and developing the business cases for full implementation.

Reporting to the Principal Technology Integration, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing integrated, customer-focused digital and technology solutions that return significant value across our value chain
  • Supporting our invention teams to understand the needs of the customer, and ensuring that these needs are well-represented and addressed through the early phases of a new technology
  • Setting up our delivery partners for success, as they implement and support these new technologies at scale and pace
  • Utilise and continually improve the Digital Delivery Framework (DDF) and R&D Framework through their application during project lifecycle.

About you

To be successful in this role you will need to have:

  • A commitment to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and your team
  • Demonstrated experience and solid understanding of our operations
  • Demonstrated experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams in a complex environment
  • Strong project management capabilities including communications, change management, risk management and business acumen (specifically for the management of project budgets, valuations, project justifications and development/analysis of options)
  • Ability to influence and negotiate win-win outcomes with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Exceptional partnering and collaborative behaviours, including a willingness to engage, constructively challenge, listen and support, but also to trust partners to deliver in their areas of responsibility/expertise
  • A strong customer focus, i.e. genuine care and understanding towards the needs of the customer and your role in providing a quality service and/or product
  • High aptitude for critical thinking, problem-solving and business improvement
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher qualification in a transferrable field (including but not limited to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields).

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Modern project management skills (Agile delivery)
  • Design thinking techniques (user centred)
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and facilitation experience.

Where you will be working

This role is based in Perth, Western Australia, out of our Central Park (Perth City) and Operation Centre (Perth Airport) office, working Monday – Friday, with ad hoc travel to sites in the Pilbara. We support and encourage flexible working arrangements.
