Rio Tinto has recently established a dedicated team to deliver large renewable energy solutions across our major jurisdictions. Rio Tinto Energy Development is focused on accelerating the development of future energy assets and securing high quality renewable energy development optionality. The team's focus on the provision of green energy will enable the decarbonisation of Rio Tinto’s existing industrial operations and support the future growth of the company.
About the role
The Senior Commercial Analyst role will sit within RTED Pacific team. RTED Pacific includes Tasmania, Queensland, New South Wales and New Zealand and represents a naturally advantaged region for low-cost renewable energy, creating significant opportunities for Rio Tinto. The Pacific Energy Development team will enable new energy solutions to be delivered in these four locations, reducing scope 1 and 2 footprint, enabling future growth and protecting the cost position of existing assets. The energy solutions will be delivered in partnership and require an understanding of both the renewable industry and commercial agreements.
As we continue to build upon this key part of our business, we are now looking for a Senior Analyst – Commercial. Reporting to the Principal Advisor – Energy, this role is predominately accountable for undertaking financial modelling and providing commercial insights to support business case development . Key role responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Building and developing robust, fit for purpose financial models to support development of the business case and support negotiations ( e.g. Power purchase agreement, debt and equity transactions)
- Maintaining, updating and improving RTED Pacific project financial models as well as portfolio financial models
- Interpret financial model outputs and convey key commercial insights to stakeholders
- Supporting transaction due diligence and deal execution process as required
- Preparing proposals for investment committee submissions encompassing key insights and recommendations
This position will ideally be based in our Brisbane, or Perth office. This newly created position can offer a number of flexible work arrangement options including flexible hours, part time, or job share arrangements.
About you
- Demonstrated experience in building robust financial models from ground up is key
- Background in a transactional environment in a Big 4 accounting firm or project finance or investment bank is desirable
- Experience in and good understanding of renewable energy projects will be advantageous
- Experience in electricity market analysis and modelling, using models such as PLEXOS to analyse the NEM and build bespoke models to analyse business problems, is highly regarded, but not essential
- Exceptional attention to detail, highly developed analytical skills and ability to challenge assumptions
- Demonstrated communication skills, including ability to build relationships and excellent writing skills
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently as part of a small and dynamic team
