The Senior CFD Engineer is responsible for delivering high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and multi-physics simulations to support engineering decision-making across Fortescue’s operations and research and development programs. This role combines advanced technical expertise in fluid mechanics, multiphase flows and heat transfer with practical delivery, automation and stakeholder collaboration to optimise performance, improve operational efficiency and support decarbonisation initiatives across Fortescue Energy.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver end-to-end CFD simulations, including geometry preparation, meshing, solver setup, execution, post-processing and interpretation of results
- Develop and apply multi-physics models, including conjugate heat transfer and multiphase flow simulations
- Integrate experimental and operational data to validate models and improve simulation accuracy
- Develop parametric CAD models and automated simulation workflows to support design optimisation and engineering studies
- Generate high-quality datasets to support artificial intelligence and machine learning surrogate modelling
- Optimise high-performance computing (HPC) and cloud-based simulation workflows to improve scalability and turnaround times
- Present simulation outcomes and technical recommendations to stakeholders to support informed engineering decisions
- Collaborate with mechanical, process, project and operations teams to solve complex engineering challenges
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the continuous improvement of modelling standards and best practices
- Support innovation, performance improvement and decarbonisation initiatives across Fortescue Energy.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Aerospace or a related Engineering discipline
- Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field is preferred
- 3–5 years’ industry experience following completion of a Master’s degree or PhD in a commercial engineering environment
- Demonstrated experience delivering CFD projects independently from concept through to completion
- Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, turbulence, heat transfer and multiphase flow
- Experience with design optimisation, parametric studies and validation against test or operational data
- Proficiency with STAR-CCM+, Ansys Fluent or OpenFOAM
- Automation and scripting capability using Python or similar programming languages
- Knowledge of verification and validation methodologies and simulation best practices
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical findings into actionable business outcomes.
