About the role

Rio Tinto has committed to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and have set ambitious interim target to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030. Diesel is the primary energy source for Rio Tinto’s core mining processes and represents a significant proportion of total carbon emissions. The Diesel Transition Program has been established to drive the reduction of diesel consumption across Rio Tinto and meet the 2030 and 2050 targets.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Commercial Analyst to join our Diesel Transition Program team based in our Perth office. This role is a great opportunity to advance your commercial and strategy career within a high performing and fast-paced team. We’ll give you exposure to Rio Tinto’s global operations and the mining industry’s decarbonisation challenge.

Reporting to the Manager Strategy, you will be:

  • Owning and utilising the diesel transition valuation models.
  • Supporting the development and refinement of the diesel transition strategy.
  • Assessing, valuing, and influencing major investment proposals, including preparing proposals for the Decarbonisation Office, Investment Committee and Board.
  • Accountable for project abatement reporting to the Decarbonisation Office and supporting external reporting requirements.
  • Responsible for providing commercial and analytical support to leadership teams.
  • Engaging with the business to assess the financial viability of projects and programmes through appropriate evaluation using financial modelling to identify key drivers for optimising value, including carbon abatement.
  • Reviewing and providing recommendations on capital expenditure applications and major operating cost decisions.
  • Fostering a culture of zero harm and continuous improvement.

What you’ll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance, Engineering or similar.
  • Completion of an MBA or similar – desirable.
  • Minimum 5 years business analysis and commercial experience – desirable.
  • Experience in mining or energy industries – desirable.
  • Experience in managing complex valuation models and providing business insights in a succinct manner.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings.
  • Excellent written skills which enable you to articulate raw information and translate it into strategic insights.
  • Resilience with a strong desire to learn and continuously seek opportunities for growth.
  • A creative outlook combined with a practical and strategic focus.
  • Sound values with high business integrity.
