About the role

We are looking for a senior commercial lawyer who will be integral to the Rio Tinto Commercial legal team and will be part of the integrated model providing legal support for Global Procurement.

Reporting to the Chief Counsel, Commercial (who is based in Chicago), you will manage a diverse and dynamic legal team in Australia in providing timely, accurate and commercially pragmatic legal advice. You will be responsible for monitoring the procurement compliance framework that will enable Rio Tinto to meet its statutory and corporate requirements.

You will safeguard Rio Tinto’s reputation and be a trusted advisor of the business on management of formal and informal conflicts. You will also play a key role in the strategy and management of external legal resources.

 You will manage day-to-day senior commercial stakeholder relationships in Australia, so you are one who values relationships and you enjoy working with people. You have exceptional communication skills and a demonstrated ability to engage, influence and partner with stakeholders across all levels of the organisation.

You will also demonstrate resilience, a focus on self-care for both you and your team and the ability to respectfully navigate sensitive discussions. You display exemplary and unquestionable personal integrity.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have :

  • A license to practice law in Australia with 15 years post- qualification experience within a large corporation or law firm (international experience would be an advantage)
  • Strong commercial acumen and are solution driven with a solid understanding and proven practical experience in negotiating complex commercial contracts
  • Clear leadership and team management skills and are skilled in coaching and mentoring of team members and stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • An agile mindset with a strong ability to lead change
