We are looking for a Senior Corporate Counsel, Digital Technologies to work as an expert within the Corporate Legal team as part of the broader Legal, Governance and Corporate Affairs function. You will provide high quality, independent and timely legal advice and ensure appropriate governance and controls are in place to ensure Rio Tinto meets its legal and regulatory obligations effectively, manages risks, and protects Rio Tinto’s people, assets and reputation.

The role will be responsible for establishing and leading a global legal community of practice to share learnings and best practices in cybersecurity, safeguarding and securing digital assets and digital technologies, including AI. This role involves both proactive and reactive measures, with the successful candidate needing to stay ahead of evolving regulations, while having the ability to support and collaborate within the wider Innovation and Technology legal team.

Reporting to the Chief Counsel Innovation & Technology and working in a collaborative community within the Innovation & Technology legal team, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Regulatory compliance and adherence to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence regulations across the key markets in which Rio Tinto operates

  • Incident response and leading legal support with a best-in-class cybersecurity, digital technologies and artificial intelligence playbooks

  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and legal trends to proactively address potential legal issues

  • Advising on current and future regulatory landscapes and adjusting strategies accordingly

  • Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with digital technologies and cybersecurity

  • Litigation support related to cybersecurity breaches or non-compliance

  • Provide legal support for agreements related to digital technologies and cybersecurity

  • Reviewing and supporting papers, policies, and standards, coordinating with key stakeholders for alignment with regards to cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and emerging high-risk technologies

  • Advising across a wide range of technology issues, such as data processing, devices and hardware, software and licensing (including review and drafting of software related agreements), software development, Apps, AI, systems maintenance and integration, technology company operations, and other new technologies

  • Develop and deliver training and awareness campaigns

  • Work closely with IT, cybersecurity, and business teams to ensure legal considerations are integrated into technology initiatives

  • Contribute expertise to, and support, Legal and other projects as required

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team

  • Qualified lawyer, with a current certificate to practise unsupervised with at least 10 years of experience, in house or in a law firm

  • Proven experience advising on cyberthreats, cybersecurity breach incidents, digital forensics and response management

  • Expertise in advising on complex emerging and digital technologies and artificial intelligence, leading and delivering legal advice across jurisdictions, including government dealings

  • Proven ability in developing and delivering commercially relevant business standards, training and guidance materials

  • Strong technical and analytical skills, with a track record of offering creative solutions to commercial problems

  • Skilled in influencing senior management and building executive relationships

  • English essential, French preferable
