Senior Data Scientist – Mine Control AI

Work Location: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

Fortescue is transforming its business through Artificial Intelligence. We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist to design, build and deploy AI solutions that improve fleet flow, planning and decision support in Mine Control. Working as a forward-deployed builder in multidisciplinary teams, you will partner with Mine Control, Mining Systems, domain specialists and operational users to translate real operational problems into analytical, optimisation and generative AI products. You will own solutions from opportunity definition and technical design through deployment, validation and adoption, with success measured through improved productivity, efficiency and decision quality across our integrated operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the design, build, deployment and support of AI, optimisation and analytics workflows for Mine Control
• Identify, quantify and validate operational opportunities using fleet, planning, geospatial and other data sources
• Collaborate with Mine Control, Mining Systems, domain specialists and users to shape clear technical requirements
• Work with frontline and operational support teams to test, validate and refine models for adoption and operational impact
• Contribute to development backlogs and collaborate with cross-functional teams to prioritise delivery
• Provide technical leadership and contribute to the data science, AI and operational decision-support community

Qualifications and Experience

• Tertiary qualification in engineering, computer science, mathematics or a related field, or equivalent experience, with 5+ years in data science, analytics, AI systems development or machine learning
• Practical experience using Python and SQL to develop production-grade data science and AI solutions
• Experience applying statistics, machine learning, optimisation or simulation in operational environments, including experimental design and model evaluation
• Experience with generative AI technologies, including agents, large language models, embedding domain knowledge and evaluating performance
• Demonstrated ability to work across operational, business and technology teams and translate complex data and technical issues into clear, testable requirements
• Experience in mining, Mine Control, fleet management or operational technology is desirable, particularly truck-cycle or fleet optimisation, geospatial analytics, or sensor and time-series prediction
