We are looking for a Senior Engineer - Electrical to safely deliver technical support across maintenance, operations and project areas. Accountable for embedding processes and systems, to risk manage current and optimize future assets.

This role is a great opportunity for an analytical, safety orientated individual who thrives in a constantly transforming work environment. Reporting to the Superintendent – Engineering, you will be: 

  • Providing oversight to the engineering practices for power and control systems across the facility
  • Planning relevant safety requirements into all activities, tasks and projects based on assessed hazards, identified critical risks and mitigating actions.
  • Supporting capital project design direction to align with the standards and development direction for the power and control systems.
  • Supporting the surface maintenance and operations teams, and developing electrical maintenance strategy for the site
  • Implementing major maintenance activities on critical electrical assets (including transformers, switchgear, substation, relays, motors and drives);
  • Reviewing and remediating asset health of major electrical assets
  • Executing multi-discipline reliability improvements, and projects through complete lifecycle
  • Leading the electrical engineering team by providing technical leadership and developmental training pathway for the teams's electrical engineers and drafts personnel
  • Engagement and engineering mentorship of graduate and vacation engineers

What you will bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team 
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications
  • Moderate to strong knowledge of asset management, service and maintenance of LV and HV distribution systems
  • A wide range of electrical expertise including power generation, protection systems, earthing, overhead and underground HV and LV distribution systems fitting with a remote mining and residential supply authority.
  • Familiar with the regulatory authorities and Australian Standards relating to electrical installations and practices
  • Understanding of electrical compliance requirements for both mining and non-mining assets.
  • Be a Registered Professional Engineer Queensland (RPEQ) or eligible to register in the short term

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Power Generation and Control System experience
  • Management experience in an operational environment

Where you will be working

Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.

Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.

The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
