Senior Electrical Power Engineer - Energy Operations

At Fortescue we are in the process of transforming our energy assets to achieve our climate change targets of zero emissions by 2030. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join an energetic and collaborative team where you will be a key member of the energy operations team and have exposure to a diverse range of engineering matters ensuring the sustainability of our operations.
In this role you will provide technical leadership and knowledge in the design, programming configuration and installation of the power system for Fortescue’s integrated power distribution and transmission network including the integration of renewable power generation, non-renewable generation and the new 220kV transmission network.
Reporting to the Energy Operations Principal Engineer this is an excellent and varied opportunity to provide specialist technical services to enable the energy operations team to reliably maintain and operate Fortescue’s growing energy asset portfolio across the Pilbara. This role demands a strong focus on teamwork to achieve the required outcomes and the promotion of high engineering standards.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Assist site operation teams in troubleshooting and engineering out issues within our power generation, distribution, and transmission systems
- Help manage power system administration activities to enable the consistent development, installation, maintenance, and operation of a Pilbara wide electrical system
- Review of high voltage submissions and other high voltage designs documents to give approvals, comments and guidance to standards and best practice.
- Interfacing with other departments within Fortescue on behalf of Energy Operations to provide guidance, advice, and steer solutions
- Support the development and implementation of new and existing standards and industry best practices.
- Providing specialist engineering solutions across a wide range of asset and life cycle issues and ensure technical asset integrity.
- Managing small through to large-scale engineering investigations including the completion of all aspects of the engineering design. These would cover new assets, major maintenance activities, failure investigations, reliability reviews, rectifications, and upgrade works.
- Responding to technical queries from the other business operations team relating to the safe and reliable operation of the power distribution network
- Engineering leadership and support to the Energy Operations groups who are accountable for the delivery of the site-specific maintenance plans
- Identify, assess, and manage operational risks
- Maintaining clear communication with key stakeholders
- Understanding and ensuring asset control systems comply with technical, regulatory and governance requirements
Qualifications and skills required:
- Proven experience and exposure in the specification, design, installation and optimisation of electrical power generation systems and supporting infrastructure
- A strong technical aptitude with the ability to quickly analyse and solve problems
- Solid power system analysis for fault investigations, protection system modelling and analysis for improvements.
- Practical experience in the mining or utilities sector (or equivalent), specifically with power generation and transmission systems.
- Experience in the administration, development, and delivery of small capex and opex projects.
- Strategic understanding of operation and maintenance of power plants with experience in power management system control
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Flexibility to travel to site when required (approximately once per month for 3-4 days). Initially travel will only be within WA
