Senior Electronics Engineer  

Work Location: Redcliffe WA

  • Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

Fortescue is also leading the global effort to help decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors and is developing and acquiring the technology and energy supply to help decarbonize the iron operations of one of the world’s largest producers of iron ore by 2030 (Scope 1 and 2 terrestrial emissions).

We are developing a world-first zero-emission regenerating battery-electric train to transport iron ore using gravitational energy to fully recharge its battery-electric systems without any additional charging requirements for the return trip to reload. This will contribute significantly to Fortescue’s target of decarbonising its iron ore operations by 2030.

As part of the product development of the Infinity Train Project, we are seeking expressions of interest from highly experienced forward-thinking, talented engineers from across multiple engineering disciplines who are ready to embrace change and be part of an innovative and inclusive team.  

Key responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for control systems hardware architecture, hardware selection and testing for Heavy Industry projects
  • Liaise with and manage internal and external multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing teams throughout the product lifecycle
  • Apply a systems engineering approach, develop hardware requirements and specifications, verification and validation procedures and tests at component and system level (DVP&R)
  • Work closely with software engineering to enable effective verification and validation of MathWorks MATLAB/Simulink model-based control system design on selected hardware
  • Support and implement quality engineering processes (System-/D-FMEA, Design for Manufacture, Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), Functional Safety etc.)
  • Toubleshoot hardware issues at test benches, test and field vehicles
  • Manage firmware versioning and release

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Computer Science, Electronics or Mechatronics Engineering degree or related field
  • Demonstrated years of experience in electronic systems design
  • Experience with embedded systems, microcontrollers and peripherals is required
  • Experience with ECAD tools (Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro/OrCAD, Siemens PADS etc.) is advantageous
  • Experience with product development or systems engineering in Rail industry is highly advantageous
  • Experience with EMI/EMC and environmental requirements, standards and testing is highly advantageous
  • Experience with model-based software development such as MATLAB/Simulink is advantageous
  • Broad experience in networking and communication technologies and protocols (CAN, Ethernet IP, Profinet, etc.) is advantageous
  • Experience with project management and program development tools (i.e. Atlassian Jira, Confluence)
