Rio Tinto is recognised as one of the world’s most innovative companies, in particular for our use of automation. AutoHaul® is the world’s first autonomous heavy haul railway system. Trains depart from two ports and can travel over 500 km to 13 mines, where they are loaded with over 25 thousand tonnes of ore per train and return, without a driver ever boarding the locomotives.
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer (10+ years) to join the Rail Systems team (part of Rail Engineering and Strategy).
This role is a great opportunity to be part of an integral team that manages the enhancement and delivery of AutoHaul® systems. This is a Perth based role working 5 days on, 2 days off, with our office located in the suburb of Rivervale where you will be working directly with the operations and system vendor teams.
What the role entails
- Coordinating engineering activities for defined areas of responsibility for full project life cycle
- Reporting engineering progress against approved plans
- Ensuring compliance with standardized processes, systems, and tools
- Supporting engagement and performance of external engineering contractors
- Work with operations and project teams to understand system requirements and initiate works driven by these requirements
- Communicates status and progress to key stakeholders within the development lifecycle
- Participation in test events and oversight of test outcomes to ensure compliance to intended design
- Facilitate workflows associated with the approved RTIO Change and Configuration Management processes
- Maintain relationships with key stakeholders
- Demonstrates a culture of collaboration, participation, and improvement
- Oversight to ensure compliance by various parties to appropriate and agreed standards
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Degree Qualifications in Science, Engineering, Signalling or equivalent.
- At least 10 years’ experience in any combination of the engineering of complex rail systems, diesel electric locomotive systems, railway wayside systems, and rail signaling.
- Understand and have experience in the operational environment of a railway network
- Experience in application of systems engineering principles, requirements engineering and risk management
- Experience in Engineering and Management of Signaling or railway safety systems including signalling schematic and system design review.
- Have experience with modern railway technical systems and integrated control systems (ERTMS/ETCS)
- Have good planning, organisational and interpersonal skills
- Experience in the use of CENELEC standards (EN50126, EN50128, EN50129)
The following is desirable:
- Familiarity with rail operation procedures and guidelines
- Existing knowledge of the Rio Tinto AutoHaul® system
- Experience troubleshooting complex systems
