About the Role

This position reports to the Lead Electrical Engineer within BHP’s Governance and Technical Stewardship in the Copper SA team, providing expertise in Power Systems (LV & HV) to support the operations and project teams. This role demonstrates BHP's focus on electrical safety and technical excellence at their Copper SA operations, particularly emphasizing the critical role of power systems engineering in their safety programs.

You will be based at our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday roster, with occasional site travel required.

As the Senior Engineer Power Systems, your responsibilities will include:

Power System BAU Management -

• Developing, maintaining and validating power system models to support operations, projects and strategic planning activities
• Undertaking power system studies including load flow, fault level, contingency, stability, harmonics and arc flash assessments for AC and DC systems
• Developing and maintaining protection settings, relay configuration files and associated technical documentation

Helping to Deliver Power System Change and Improvements -

• Providing technical input into power infrastructure planning, network performance, reliability improvement and future power strategy initiatives
• Engaging and managing consultants, vendors and specialist service providers to deliver technical work packages
• Translating modelling outcomes and technical analysis into practical engineering solutions and network design improvements

Assisting with System Fault Resolution -

• Investigating protection-related faults and abnormal power system events through analysis of relay operations, event records and system performance

Delivering Value for our Stakeholders and Customers -

• Collaborating across operational, engineering, project and asset teams to identify risks, resolve technical issues and deliver business value
• Providing clear, concise and evidence-based technical advice to governance and assurance forums
• Managing multiple priorities, technical tasks and projects in a dynamic environment
• Preparing technical reports, recommendations and presentations that support operational, project and strategic decision-making

Safety and Compliance -

• Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to safety and BHP values in all engineering activities and stakeholder interactions
• Applying sound engineering principles in accordance with relevant standards, legislation and industry requirements, including AS, IEC, IEEE, Electricity Acts and Regulations, the National Electricity Rules and AEMO guidelines

About You

You will be an experienced electrical engineer with strong technical expertise in power systems analysis, modelling, protection and network performance. You will possess a practical understanding of complex industrial power systems and a proven ability to solve technical challenges that impact safety, reliability and productivity.

You will be comfortable working within a matrix organisation and building effective relationships through sound engineering judgement, quality technical analysis and clear communication. You will be able to translate complex technical concepts into practical recommendations for operational teams, project stakeholders and senior leaders.

You take pride in delivering solutions that improve network performance, reliability and resilience while supporting Copper SA's long-term power strategy.

To Be Successful in obtaining this role you will be able to demonstrate:

• A tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering
• Experience in power system modelling using ETAP, including steady-state and dynamic studies
• Experience using DIgSILENT PowerFactory (highly regarded)
• Strong capability in power system studies including load flow, fault level, stability, harmonics, contingency and arc flash analysis
• Experience developing practical engineering and network design solutions from technical studies
• Protection engineering experience, including fault investigation and troubleshooting of power systems
• Experience within mining, mineral processing, oil and gas, heavy industrial or comparable power-intensive industries (a utility background would be considered)
• Sound knowledge of relevant electrical standards, regulations and industry requirements
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical reporting skills with excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Proven stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams
• A proactive commitment to safety, continuous improvement and value creation
