Our Opportunity

 

Work Location:  Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

 

Roster:  Monday to Friday

 

Reporting to the Principal Environmental Geoscientist, this is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Environmental Geochemist to play a key role in supporting Fortescue's operations, studies, environmental approvals and mine closure activities.

 

Based in Perth, the role offers flexible working opportunities and occasional travel to site to support operational and project requirements.

 

Working within a highly collaborative and technically focused team, you will provide specialist expertise in acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), reactive ground assessment and geochemical characterisation.

 

You will partner with stakeholders across the business to identify and manage geochemical risks, influence environmental outcomes, and support sustainable mining practices across our operations.

 

This role offers the opportunity to apply your technical knowledge to complex environmental challenges while contributing to innovative solutions that support Fortescue's long-term operational and closure objectives.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Review and interpret geological and geochemical information, including logging data, assay results and geological mapping, to assess the potential for acid and/or metalliferous drainage (AMD) and reactive ground risks.
  • Develop scopes of work and manage geochemical investigation programs and specialist consultants, including sampling campaigns, seepage assessments and pit lake studies.
  • Provide technical advice on water and tailings monitoring requirements, including identification of key analytes and monitoring parameters.
  • Manage waste characterisation programs to assess physical and erosional properties for landform design and alternative growth media applications.
  • Investigate deviations in AMD and reactive ground model performance and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Review mining pits and geological data to identify and flag potential AMD and reactive ground risks.
  • Contribute technical inputs and reports supporting environmental approvals, operational requirements, mine closure planning and regulatory submissions.
  • Conduct peer reviews of technical reports prepared for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Deliver training and mentoring on AMD management, geological interpretation and environmental monitoring practices.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the business to effectively manage geochemical risk.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Previous experience working within the Pilbara, including exposure to magnetite deposits.
  • A strong understanding of mining and processing operations, together with the collection and interpretation of orebody knowledge.
  • Demonstrated experience in geochemical characterisation, particularly relating to acid and/or metalliferous drainage (AMD) and reactive ground assessment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex technical information.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with a collaborative approach to working across multidisciplinary teams.
