Yancoal Australia is Australia’s largest pure play coal producer. It boasts three tier one thermal coal mines in New South Wales together with interests in three other metallurgical and thermal coal mines located in New South Wales and Queensland.  Yancoal Australia also manages five other Australian coal mines on behalf of related parties. Yancoal currently employs over 4,000 people across its operations. Our Ashton Coal Operations include an underground mine and coal handling and preparation plant, located in Camberwell.  The site operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  

Job Tasks and Responsibilities

The Senior Geologist will report to the Technical Services Manager and form part of the Ashton Technical Services Department. Some of the regular tasks of the Senior Geologist will include:

  • Underground/Surface Geological mapping
  • Maintenance of Ashton's geological model
  • Development of Underground Authority to Mine Plans for Longwall and Development panels
  • Tenement management and other JORC related work
  • Annual Exploration Plans and associated drilling programs and other related activities

Skills and Experience

To be considered for this exciting and challenging role, you will be able to confidently meet the following criteria:

  • A degree in Geology, Geoscience or Science (with a Geology Major)
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in Underground coal mining
  • A sound understanding of responsibilities in relation to the Work Health and Safety (mines & Petroleum) Act and Regulations
  • Confident in using Minex Geological modelling software
  • Experience with AutoCAD software
  • Strong analytical and problem solving ability
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication skills
