About the role
Reporting to the GM of Technical & Studies, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer will provide group wide geotechnical expertise in analysing and assessing ground conditions, providing recommendations on mine excavation geometrics and appropriate levels of ground support to ensure a safe and efficient underground mining operations across the group’s operational sites. Your initial focus will be supporting the group’s North Qld and Cracow Operations plus improvements across all operational sites and projects. In addition, this role will see you providing consultation on Tailings storage facility design and strategy, geotechnical data collection and training of site team members.

About the role

- Advise and provide consultative services to Technical Services teams on geotechnical issues.
- Maintain and update the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) and ensure compliance with the site GCMP, including ground support QA/QC test work, such as grout strength and friction bolt pull tests.
- Design, review and monitor ground support requirements for underground stopes and development areas.
- Complete numerical modelling or similar to ensure safe extraction of stopes.
- Undertake regular reviews of the quality control of support installation and ensure any deficiencies with the ground support system at the mine are promptly reported to Underground Manager/General Manager
- Investigate and report on all significant activity such as rock noise, rock falls, large stress variations, unusual seismic activity, and high rates of excavation convergence.
- Present ground awareness training for mining team members and communicate relevant GCMP risks such as subsidence, air blast, inrush and working and around voids.
- Complete Geotechnical project work, UG mapping, sampling, and stope monitoring; and all facets of ground control.
- Assist with monthly reconciliations, update excavation wireframes and geotechnical models and complete stope performance reports.
About You
- Tertiary qualification in Geology or Geotechnical Engineering
- Significant experience with demonstrated experience in an operational role with particular focus on narrow vein underground mining.
- A current C class drivers’ licence
- Proficient skill in Surpac/Deswik, Leapfrog and Excel and an understanding of database management
- Well-practised in QA/QC and geotechnical data collection methodologies.
- Working knowledge of underground mining methods
- Ability to prepare studies reports
- Well-developed communication skills including interpersonal, negotiation, influencing, verbal and written.
