Senior Heritage Advisor

 Work Location: Brisbane

Roster: Monday – Friday

Fortescue is entering a phase of exponential growth and is expanding as we move towards our decarbonisation mission into green energy. This means our Heritage team is expanding and looking for a Senior Heritage Advisors to join their team.

Based in the Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) Brisbane office, the Senior Heritage Advisor is responsible for supporting end-to-end delivery of the FFI Eastern States of Australia and NZ projects. Reporting to the Heritage Principal – Project Development, the Senior Advisor is responsible for providing strategic direction and technical advice to the business and project teams, in relation to the management and safe delivery of FFI’s cultural heritage requirements.

Pivotal to this role is to maintain holistic relationships with internal stakeholders (FFI Project teams, Community and Social Performance, Environmental Approvals, Lands and GIS) and external stakeholders (Native Title Prescribed Bodies Corporate, Members of Native Title Groups, Archaeology and Anthropology Consultants, Relevant Government Authorities and Regulators).

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Working safely to coordinate (and participate in when required) heritage surveys and other heritage related field activities in collaboration with Traditional Custodians, their representatives and internal stakeholders.
  • Providing strategic advice to internal stakeholders in regard to heritage approvals and related heritage functions.
  • Help to develop Cultural Heritage Management Plans or Agreements with internal and external stakeholders, in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with business requirements.
  • Ensure approvals are sought in accordance with obligations set by FFI’s Agreements, and are compliant with relevant State and Commonwealth Aboriginal Cultural Heritage legislation.
  • The authorisation of on-site works, in compliance with Fortescue’s management systems, to ensure compliance with the relevant State and Commonwealth legislation, any future Aboriginal Act or Bill and FFI’s land access agreements, Indigenous Land Use Agreements, Cultural Heritage Management Plans or Agreements as well as any other commitments or obligations.
  • Develop and maintain an Obligations Register, that is transparent within the business.
  • Build and enhance positive relations with key internal and external stakeholders to meet and advance operational and development requirements.
  • Engender a positive team and workplace culture.
  • Assist in the collaboration of heritage content for external meetings with Native Title Parties and Government Regulators.

Qualifications and skills required:                                               

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a similar role in cultural heritage within the mining or energy sector. A tertiary qualification in archaeology, anthropology, environmental science, sociology, law or a related discipline would be highly valued.
  • Knowledge of State and Commonwealth legislation in relation to Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and unsupervised.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and as a collaborative team member.
  • Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated ability to deliver results while working on multiple projects within tight timeframes.
  • Highly developed administrative and computer skills in the Microsoft Office suite and spatial management software (Arc GIS or similar). Ability to learn and use new software quickly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders from a diverse range of backgrounds, to establish and strengthen relationships. High-level interpersonal skills.
