Senior Heritage Advisor

Work Location: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people

Roster: Monday - Friday

The Senior Advisor - Heritage Compliance and Operations, is responsible for providing strategic advice to the Heritage team in relation to the proactive identification, management and monitoring of Fortescue's internal and external heritage compliance obligations. This includes developing and maintaining compliance-related procedures; developing a compliance register and schedule; overseeing and facilitating infield compliance activities; stakeholder engagement and training; and, assisting / advising on day-to-day heritage compliance matters ensuring a consistent approach.In anticipation of the new WA Aboriginal Heritage Act the Senior Advisor will provide expert advice and guidance to Fortescue in ensuring the heritage management and compliance practice, procedure and policy meets the requirements of the new Act. Additionally, the Senior Advisor will provide proactive early assessments of heritage sites and places that may require bespoke compliance management strategies.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Ensure compliance with heritage obligations.
  • Actively educate internal & external personnel of the criticality of heritage compliance and the processes used to ensure compliance.
  • Auditing / monitoring ground activities against compliance obligations.
  • Work collaboratively with traditional owners and the regulator, reporting compliance against obligations.

 Qualifications and skills required:

  • Degree in Archaeology/Anthropology or other similarly related field.
  • Deep knowledge of WA Government legislation, policy and practice in the administration of heritage regulation.
  • At least 3 years experience in a similar role including working with Aboriginal people and in applying heritage law and regulation in the assessment of heritage places.
  • A working knowledge of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA) and an understanding of the new Aboriginal Heritage Act.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and as a collaborative team member.
  • Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated ability to deliver results while working under pressure.
  • High level of interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to collaboratively and positively with internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and to communicate with influence.
  • Highly developed administrative and computer skills Microsoft Office suite and spatial software (Arc GIS or similar) and demonstrated ability to learn new software applications quickly.
