We are Australia’s largest pure-play coal producer generating over $10 billion in Foreign Direct Investment; owning, operating or participating in coal mines across NSW, Queensland and Western Australia. Located 14km northwest of Singleton, Ashton underground mine has been operational for nearly 20 years. The mine produces semi-soft coking coal for export through the Port of Newcastle, for use in the steel manufacturing industry and thermal coal for power generation. Ashton employs approximately 330 people across our surface and underground operations.
Job Tasks and Responsibilities
We are seeking a passionate, proactive and experienced Health & Safety Advisor to join our team and support leaders in building & sustaining a world-class safety culture.
You will be working across all health, safety, and risk-related activities at Ashton, ensuring alignment with Yancoal’s values and behaviours whilst driving continuous improvement in safety performance.
You will also be responsible for:
- Partnering with leaders to implement and continuously improve health & safety processes, including risk assessments, audits, inspections, hazard reporting, accident/incident investigations, work access permits, and behavioural safety observations.
- Conducting and supporting safety meetings, site inspections, and other activities to reinforce safety standards.
- Supporting managers to ensure employees and contractors comply with Ashton’s Safety and Health Management System and relevant legislation.
- Contributing to high-level safety investigations by reviewing reports and ensuring robust corrective and preventative actions are identified and implemented.
- Providing clear and consistent communication with stakeholders – from management to frontline employees – regarding safety obligations, plans, and performance improvement.
- Driving targeted safety improvement projects in response to incident findings, workforce feedback, and business needs.
Skills and Experience

Essential requirements include:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a similar role
- Minimum Certificate IV in Occupational/Workplace Health & Safety
- Previous leadership experience and ability to manage a direct report
- Formal Incident Investigation qualifications (Taproot, Essential Factors, or ICAM)
- RIIRIS402D – Carry out the risk management processes and demonstrated experience in risk assessment facilitation
- Workplace drug and alcohol testing accreditation
- Strong knowledge of WHS legislation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven experience in driving safety culture improvements
- Previous experience in mining (preferably underground) or heavy industry environments
- Working knowledge of contractor compliance platforms (Pegasus)
Desirable attributes include:
- Knowledge of occupational health and hygiene principles
- Mental health awareness training
- Additional ICAM investigation experience
