About the role
We are looking for a Senior Manager 3 Lines of Defence Implementation to strengthen our assurance programs across our entire business. This role will have accountability for our businesses in the Southern Hemisphere.
Reporting to the GM Risk, you will be a part of the Risk Area of Expertise (AoE), who own Rio Tinto’s global risk framework and processes. Partnering with colleagues in the AoE, the technical Centres of Excellence (CoE) and Product Group (PG) leaders, you'll leverage your exceptional stakeholder engagement capability and project management acumen to deliver a sustainable group-wide improvement in the effectiveness of our risk assurance efforts.
Your operational experience will be essential as you will be required to closely partner with subject matter experts and operational leaders across our business to develop new, refine existing and influence the embedding of simplified Group-level risk assurance requirements for high consequence risks consistently across the PGs. You will be a critical interface in facilitating an effective partnership between our frontline leaders and the subject matter experts in the AoEs and CoEs involved in the project. In doing so, you will directly contribute to the Group’s ‘Best Operator’ strategy by enhancing confidence in the strength of our critical controls to sustain the resilience of our business in managing material risks.
Optimisation of current 2nd Line assurance activities and processes are also a key deliverable. To help our 1st Line teams focus their verification efforts on what matters most, we must simplify our activities as much as possible. We must also adapt assurance activities to meet heightened regulatory requirements. Whilst Group Internal Audit remains independent, you will need to partner with our 3rd Line to ensure the consistency of approach.
What you’ll bring
- Strong business acumen developed in a variety of operational and functional roles coupled with knowledge of leadership within our operations, either through having directly experienced operational leadership roles, or extensive time in the field supporting operational leaders
- A depth of experience in mining (underground, open cut) or minerals processing (smelting, refining)
- Strong stakeholder engagement experience with demonstrated experience partnering with complex stakeholder groups, including senior leaders
- Engaging speaker and presenter, ability to translate complex topics into simple to understand messaging appropriate to the audience
- Complex program and change management experience
- A track record of success leading high performing teams with demonstrated collaboration and influencing skills
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally to deliver project outcomes

Where you’ll be working
This role reports to the GM Risk, a networked team within Group Finance. We partner with the business (Operations and Functions) to embed risk management into Rio Tinto’s core business processes and decision making in pursuit of both creating and protecting value.
