About the role

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Manager Communities & Social Performance (CSP) to lead a team of CSP practitioners across our Western Cape Bauxite assets, including:

  • Andoom operations
  • Amrun operations
  • Growth projects in Amrun (southern region)
  • Closure projects in East Weipa

The Weipa bauxite operations contain our largest social footprint of all operations in the Rio Tinto Aluminium portfolio. The operations cover 12 unique Traditional Owner Groups spread across the Western Cape York Perninsula region. Rio Tinto Weipa operations have three active agreements, including the Ely Agreement, WCCCA Agreement and the Weipa Town Authority Agreement. The CSP department in Weipa includes five key workstreams covering: (1) Agreements, (2) Cultural Heritage, (3) Indigenous Employment, (4) CSP Governance and (5) Projects & Closure.

The Senior CSP manager will develop medium term strategies to deliver CSP excellence in line with Rio Tinto’s CSP Standard (2022). The manager will provide leadership in building and maintaining meaningful relationships and partnerships both internally and externally. This role requires skills in effectively managing social risks, impacts and capability, and identifying social opportunities that can be leveraged through innovative initiatives. Cultural Heritage makes up a large proportion of the workload in the CSP Weipa department and a background in Cultural Heritage/CSP/Permits is essential for this role.

Being one of Rio Tinto’s senior leaders means helping to run a company that drives human progress. Many of Weipa’s initiatives support this objective, and this role will play a key part in driving these initiatives forward.

We offer competitive, performance-focused remuneration and a wide range of benefits to reward your contribution. With a global reach, the opportunities to develop are broad and exciting.

Reporting to the General Manager CSP Pacific Operations (PacOps), you will:

  • Lead, grow and develop a team of CSP professionals
  • Develop lasting and trusting relationships with local community, employees and Traditional Owners
  • Lead the delivery of the PacOps integrated CSP Strategy in Weipa – developing a CSP Plan for how this will translate in the Weipa context, and the CSP initiatives that will be delivered to meet its objectives
  • Identify, negotiate, implement, and maintain agreements, commitments, and/or partnerships with external stakeholders to support the business and strengthen the communities where we operate
  • Be a key member of the Weipa GM/ops leadership team, working cross-functionally to advocate and influence for CSP work and outcomes
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge base of host communities and utilise your expertise to deliver shared benefit in these communities
  • Lead and ensure delivery of engagement strategies and communications plans
  • Facilitate relationships between asset leaders and external stakeholders
  • Manage and mitigate social risk and opportunities through business activities and interactions with communities and stakeholders
  • Facilitate the resolution of complex CSP situations and challenges.
  • Strengthen the CSP capability of team members and business leaders in Weipa’s assets, including through embedding CSP into daily business decisions via existing systems and processes (risk management, leadership decision making)
  • Represent the business at community and industry forums in a manner aligned with Rio Tinto’s values
  • Engage with the business on key technical CSP deliverables including responsible management of land and tenure, preservation of cultural heritage, supporting local participation and co-designing a positive long-term legacy for Weipa with key stakeholders
  • Support Growth Project Studies in line with Rio Tinto Project Way to ensure CSP embedded in project scope and budget from early stages
  • Lead East Weipa closure CSP workstream
  • Ensure the activities of team members are aligned to maintaining compliance with legal and other commitments, including company policy and standards relating to CSP.

What you’ll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Strong skills and experience in leading and managing teams.
  • Extensive experience in social performance, stakeholder engagement, permitting, cultural heritage, community relations or community development in a similar role (essential)

  • Proven ability to build positive relationships, including building and leading a team
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills

  • Regional economic development skills
  • Familiarity with Western Cape and its unique socio-economic context (preferred)

Where you will be working

Weipa offers a coastal community rich in geographical beauty and cultural heritage that provides families with opportunities to participate in leisure activities, sports and community events. With a strong sense of community, the region has plenty of natural beauty to offer including the opportunities for boating, fishing, camping and exploring. Construction of the Amrun mining operation, located 40 kilometres southwest of Weipa, was completed in late 2018 expanding our bauxite operations to continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits.
