We are looking for a Senior Manager, Corporate Communications, to manage a team responsible for developing and implementing key communications processes, materials and activity to support a high-performing communications function in Australia while finding creative and effective ways to tell Rio Tinto’s story across multiple channels.
The role will be responsible for embedding Rio Tinto’s crisis communications principles and practices, keeping abreast of and managing potential external issues, risks and opportunities and working constructively with all relevant stakeholders. It will also oversee Rio Tinto’s communications-led partnerships to help foster strong stakeholder engagement and reputation outcomes.
Reporting to the General Manager Communications, you will be responsible for;
- Establishing Rio’s Australian corporate communications practice by leading the delivery of key communication processes, materials and activity critical to the efficient running of a high-performing communications function in Australia.
- Providing expert communications guidance and support to relevant Product Group and functional teams based in Australia.
- Preparing for and managing emerging reputation issues and opportunities in a timely manner including embedding crisis management protocols and procedures.
- Coordinating Rio Tinto’s Australian speech program.
- Helping deliver excellent communications for Group executives and Board members.
- Acting as an Australia expert with Communications colleagues around the world, bringing country perspective to the Group and supporting Group initiatives in market.
- Working closely with the General Manager of Communications Australia, in helping to identify opportunities, spot issues and drive success
- Playing a key role in a pan-function approach to deepening Rio Tinto’s relationships with key external stakeholders and drive positive sentiment on key themes.
- Helping deliver an effective proactive reputation programme in Australia, aligned to both country and Product Group strategic objectives and Group themes - to positively shift sentiment in key audiences.
- Reviewing relevant employee and reputation insight and refine plans for Australia communications in line with opportunities.
- Providing guidance and mentorship to communications colleagues based in market / time zone (in both Group and Australia roles).
About you
To succeed in this role, you will have;
- At least 15 years’ experience in managing reputation, communications and stakeholder engagement in large companies, agencies, or government departments (ideally with experience of best-in-class Communications planning and reputation insight).
- Experience of managing serious reputational issues including demonstrated knowledge in crisis communications.
- A demonstrated collegiate approach and proven track record of excellent teamwork with senior peers.
- Proven capability to build, lead and engage high performing teams.
- Excellent strategic capability and a proven ability to deliver results in a complex environment.
- A record of successfully building and maintaining strong relationships with relevant stakeholder groups.
- A high level of diplomacy and the ability to manage conflict and gain consensus.
- Ability to remain calm and considered under pressure.
- Demonstrated highly collaborative behaviour and ability to derive value from the broader organisation through sharing knowledge, experience, and skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A structured and organised thinker who is comfortable working at pace.
- Experience of operating in a range of international markets useful.
