The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join South32’s Sustainability Strategy teamin a newly created role as Senior Manager Environment Strategy.  

Reporting to the VP Sustainability Strategy this role is responsible for leading the South32 Environment strategy, including advising the Board and Lead Team on environment-related risks and opportunities, including water, biodiversity, waste/circular economy, and internal and external reporting on progress against South32’s public environment-related commitments.  In this role you will have the opportunity to develop the team, including recruitment of new team members.

Accountabilities 

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join South32’s Sustainability Strategy teamin a newly created role as Senior Manager Environment Strategy.

Leading the group Environment Strategy team, you will:

• Develop the environment strategy for South32 globally in line with South32’s purpose and strategy
• Develop strategies and approve plans for environment programs, including oversight of South32’s management of biodiversity and natural capital, water, waste/circular economy
• Advise the Board and Lead Team on environment trends, opportunities and risks, and on updates to the strategy required to meet changes in expectations or circumstances
• Lead the delivery of South32’s environment reporting obligations and collaborate with Reporting and Governance functions to ensure consistent and accurate environment-related reporting and disclosures
• Manage and lead engagement with key external stakeholders on policy matters related to environment

• Establish and maintain a governance framework to manage environment risks and opportunities
• Provide guidance and coaching to teams executing plans for environment programs, including oversight of the biodiversity, water, waste and circular economy programs
• Provide guidance to support the overall management of the implementation of environmental performance-led actions, including the analysis of effectiveness of management plans that mitigate risks to biodiversity, water, waste management and other stakeholders
• Engage with investors, as required, for environment-related issues
• Liaise with VPs Operations and Functions to ensure alignment of business plans and environment-related commitments

About you

• Bachelor’s degree (minimum), post graduate level qualifications desirable
• Extensive technical and applied knowledge of environment issues in a multi-location company context, preferably gained in a diversified natural resource company. 
• Knowledge of nature/environment-related risks and opportunities, trends, and expectations of investors, civil society and other stakeholders.
• Ability to influence and gain the trust of the Lead Team and Board.

Location

This role will be based at our corporate office in the heart of Perth CBD with stunning river views. Interstate and international candidates who are open to relocating to Perth are encouraged to apply.

For desirable candidates, we may consider basing the role in other South32 office locations.
