About the role
Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.
We are looking for a Senior Manager, ERP Modernisation Architecture Lead to spearhead the multi-phased SAP ERP modernisation initiative, transitioning from SAP ECC6 to SAP S/4HANA. The initiative involves leveraging a brownfield approach initially, followed by selective greenfield transformations. The role will focus on realising a best-of-breed, composable architecture strategy, integrating third-party and modular solutions. As the Chair of the Technology Design Authority (TDA), the Lead Architect will oversee all technology architectural governance to ensure alignment with enterprise standards. Collaboration with Global Process Owners (GPOs) will be crucial for mapping and optimising business processes.
As a key architect for this major organisational change, the Lead Architect will lead a diverse team of architects—including Enterprise Architects (EA), Solution Architects (SA), Domain Architects (DA), Integration Architects (IA), and other IT specialists. This team will collaborate closely with various stakeholders to design, implement, and integrate a scalable, future-proof ERP solution that supports Rio Tinto’s strategic objectives and operational excellence.
This position involves hands-on leadership in shaping the technical architecture, data migration strategies, SAP RISE cloud adoption, process optimisation, and deployment models while ensuring the transformation aligns with IS&T’s broader Technology and digital strategies.
Reporting to the Head of Strategy and Architecture and working in a collaborative community, your key responsibilities will be:
Define and maintain the architecture strategy for a complex, multi-platform ecosystem, including SAP S/4HANA and Best-of-Breed platforms (e.g., HSEC/Enablon, HCM/Workday, ITSM/ServiceNow, S2C, and others)
Lead the development of architecture blueprints, ensuring that all systems—ERP and non-ERP—are integrated to deliver business value across the organisation's value chain
Oversee the design and execution of the ERP modernisation roadmap, with an initial brownfield migration from SAP ECC6 to SAP S/4HANA, followed by selective greenfield transformations to modernise processes and adopt new SAP S/4HANA capabilities as needed
Provide technical leadership in designing the end-to-end architecture

We are finding better ways to simplify our operations, expand our capability and improve productivity, to do this we are embarking on an exciting journey that will transition us to a modern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) platform moving from an old, outdated technology (currently RTBS) to a new digitally enabled S/4 Hana and application ecosystem.
An effective RTBS is a key enabler to Best Operator, given 30-60 per cent of our frontline time is spent in the system. To deliver this change we must ensure that we work closely with each of the Product Group’s (PGs) and Functions to modernise how we operate in the system. Consequently, this is not a technology led programme, it is business led.
Where you’ll be working
The newly created ERP Implementation Programme team within the Group Finance function will bring together a variety of specialist skillsets to shape our digital future and simplify, automate, modernise and improve our ways of working globally.
