Senior Mechanical Engineer

Work Location:

Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

Roster:

Monday to Friday

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work within the Asset Management & Utilities Engineering team to support our Operations and our Projects teams.

Our operational assets include Fixed Plant Processing facilities, Rail assets, Port assets, dewatering assets and various non-process infrastructure assets including several new Hydrogen and Ammonia facilities.

This role will have a particular focus with regards to design and operational readiness review of Fortescue’s emerging Hydrogen and Ammonia assets.

Regular visits to our Operations in the Pilbara are an expectation of this role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical support to our Operational Projects and Major Projects Teams, assisting with; project scoping and specification, review of project design deliverables, response to technical queries and liaison with external design consultants to ensure projects are compliant with applicable regulations, standards and FMG specifications.
  • Providing support to our existing Operations by investigating equipment failures, providing direction & technical guidance to site stakeholders, supporting site teams during breakdown events, and coaching and mentoring of junior engineers.
  • Assisting with continual improvement of Fortescue’s documented Procedures, Engineering Standards and Equipment Specifications to provide pragmatic best for business guidance to all Fortescue stakeholders.
  • Providing safety leadership to effectively identify and manage technical risks across Fortescue.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years experience as a Mechanical Engineer in mining and/or related industries. 
  • Strong knowledge of relevant Australian & Industry Standards, industry regulations and relevant WHS Legislation.
  • Design, construction and commissioning experience of process plant and equipment within a mining, chemicals or O&G context.
  • A mix of owner’s rep, and EPC(M) design, project delivery and operational experience would be highly regarded.
  • Ability to specify / size / design processing equipment suited to the candidate’s industry experience. For a mining background this might include: including stockpiles, bins, crushers, feeders, conveyors, pumps, pump hoppers, tanks and piping etc.
  • Ability to perform detailed calculations for the above types of equipment as required.
  • An understanding of construction, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance requirements to effect good safety outcomes in design and risk assessment forums.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and continual improvement focus.
  • Ability to efficiently close out work to a high standard of quality.
  • Ability to develop high quality standards, procedures and specifications.
  • Ability to influence and engage stakeholders, both internal and external. Well-developed communication, interpersonal, facilitation and presentation skills.
