Managed by Yancoal, Premier Coal is the leading coal producer in Western Australia. Operating an open cut coal mine near Collie in the South West of WA, the operation produces coal for the domestic market with contracts to 2030.
Job Tasks and Responsibilities
The Senior Mine Geologist will be responsible for the creation and monitoring of all information, plans and reports of geological aspects relating to the operational planning process. This role will oversee and assist with the formulation of coal mining plans and will monitor and direct quality control with regards to coaling activities. The Senior Mine Geologist will ensure the regular monitoring and identification of all geotechnical hazards on site and will work to ensure overburden and coaling operations are conducted with reference to these hazards.
- Maintain and manage capture and recording of all geological data relating to short and medium term planning.
- Provide day to day leadership in the Mine Planning team and other staff on issues relating to operational geology and coal mining on site.
- Provide a forecast of coaling extraction. This will include quality, tonnages, bypass, and estimated time of extraction.
- Works closely with Mining Supervisor to develop coal extraction strategies that minimises dilution and losses as well as optimises the Bypass/Washed coal mix in line with requirements of Logistics Coordinator.
Skills and Experience
Skills
- Highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Skilled in hazard identification and responsive to safety issues.
- Skilled in problem solving and mining scheduling.
- Competent on full range of Microsoft programs.
Knowledge
- Excellent knowledge of coal mining process and theories.
- Excellent knowledge of coal quality principles.
- Excellent knowledge of coal geology.
- Working knowledge of the Mining Act 1978 (WA) and associated regulations and how they pertain to individual and supervisor obligations.
Experience
- Highly experienced in the provision of Geological applications within an Open Cut mining environment.
- Highly experience in mining coal quality.
- Sound understanding of practical coal mining processes.
Qualifications
- Tertiary Qualifications in Geology or associated discipline.
- Current open driver’s license (mandatory).
