We are looking for a Senior Mining Engineer within the Rio Tinto Oyu Tolgoi Technical and Strategic Mine Planning team. This role is responsible for mine planning support and strategic direction to maximize value of the integrated underground and open pit operation.
Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting developments in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains Reserves and Resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. Managed by Rio Tinto, Oyu Tolgoi operates a large open pit and concentrator with an underground project ramping up to be one of the deepest and largest block cave mines in the world. With a high demand of skills required to complete the project safely and successfully, Oyu Tolgoi is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development and the prosperity of the Mongolian people.
This role is a great opportunity for an experienced mining engineer looking to cement and develop their skills while influencing the planning outcomes of a significant mineral inventory. Working a Monday to Friday roster in Brisbane with periodic travel to Oyu Tolgoi site in Mongolia and reporting to the Manager Integrated Planning, you will be:
- Defining the open pit strategic direction
- Supporting the Resources and Reserves reporting process
- Developing integrated open pit and underground production designs and schedules to support the long-term planning effort and optimisation projects
- Incorporating a deep understanding of costs, productivity, geotechnical and other influencing factors in mine design and schedules
- Analysing opportunities for improvement in the open pit and engaging with operations for implementation of initiatives
- Taking part in internal and external review and assurance processes
What you will bring
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Degree qualifications in Mining Engineering
- Strong skills in the full suite of mine planning and evaluation software - optimization, design, productivity estimation and scheduling - Alastri and Minesight experience beneficial
- Experience in a combination of operational and mine planning roles in deep hard rock open pit mining environment with underground exposure also beneficial
- Ability work independently and engage with operations and technical personnel at all levels
- Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultants
- Excellent writing skills, attention to detail and an ability to problem solve.
