Title: Senior or Principal Technical Safety Engineer (Projects)

Work Location: Perth                                                                        

Roster: Monday to Friday

The Technical Safety team’s mission is to “Develop Process Safety standards, tools, programs, training, and work processes and lead the implementation of them on a global basis to comply with Company Technical Safety policies and goals.”

The successful candidate will join the Technical Safety team as a key member and provide Technical Safety Engineering guidance and support to the Australian and International Projects teams.

Reporting to the Technical Safety Team Leader, The Senior / Principal Technical Safety Engineer will advise on the use of Company, International and local regulatory standards/policies and their implementation within the engineering and operations teams.

During the engineering phase of a project, the Senior / Principal Technical Safety Engineer will work with the project team, providing appropriate advice on leadership, deliverables, guidance or information to other engineering and design disciplines.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Communicating company Technical Safety Management vision, expectations, strategies, and initiatives to personnel
  • Interpretation of Company, National and local Regulatory/Code requirements where the plant will be located and provide high level guidance and Technical Safety Strategy requirements to the project teams as to how these can be met
    • Developing Safety in Design Philosophies or equivalent documentation to outline how the project intends to meet the above
  • Management of the Major Accident Hazard identification and risk assessment process for the projects. Oversee specialized risk studies, including quantified risk analysis for company risk assessment or regulatory requirements
  • Co-ordinate Process Hazard Reviews (HAZOPs, LOPA, etc) and Safety in Design studies for projects to ensure adequate safeguards are in place and recommend additional safeguards as required to meet safety targets
  • Ensuring Major Accident Hazard risks are controlled to ALARP and involvement in decisions over the selection of the appropriate controls
  • Providing inputs into regulatory submissions such as Safety Cases etc.
  • Providing inputs into Company Validation and Verification Processes etc.
  • Provide inputs to and support development of Technical Safety standards, tools, programs, training courses, and work process
  • Mentoring of Technical Safety Engineers and Senior Technical Safety Engineers within the Technical Safety team.

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Senior Technical Safety Engineer: Minimum of 7 to 15+ years of experience in process / technical safety as a primary role with significant experience (5+ years) on Major Capital Projects, and ideally 5+ years in an Operator’s / Owner’s team.
  • Principal Technical Safety Engineer: Minimum of 15+ years of experience in process / technical safety as a primary role with significant experience (10+ years) on Major Capital Projects, and ideally 10+ years in an Operator’s / Owner’s team.
  • Significant experience with Australian and International regulatory framework for process facilities including requirements associated with Major Hazard Facilities.
